What are others thoughts on this?

For me it's just the sort of insular short sightedness that people have been expecting of Trump.

This is clearly a decision that's been driven by the real powerhouses behind the Presidential office..as in Oil.

I can see this ending badly for the US and ultimately Trump as although it may mean in the short term more jobs for the Rust Belt etc...in the long term not investing in Renewables will just see them fall behind China and European firms.

It still amazes me the level of denial regarding Global Warming on that side of the pond

I agree. As described in today's NYT, it's stupid and reckless.

It's also a lie that this will do anything to benefit jobs in the US coal industry, jobs that became redundant long before climate change became apparent due to technology and advancements in mining methods.

It makes no sense economically and no sense scientifically. The bloke is a dangerous crackpot.

Firstly its a non binding agreement. Secondly I think the real bone of contention is that whilst the USA pays the most they get the least out of It with the likes of China & India etc paying the least and gaining the most. In any case nothing can happen until 2020 which means by then Trump wont be in power.

I also see that the likes of Google, Apple, FBook and Microsoft have openly criticised his stance.

If Trump had back tracked all we would be hearing about is criticism about consistency.

I think Trump is wrong on lots of things but I can't abide hearing...what amounts to hatred....it skews everything....it's amusing though...kind of like listening to him is amusing.

I think Trump has a point about the deal....I don't think it was a good one for America.

One thing I'm convinced about is that the Paris accord will do fcuk all about the climate.

With world population increase it's technology or bust on this question I'm afraid and anyone worrying about renewables in their nice protected living environments is really a cheese and onion sandwich short of a picnic.

Wasn't this part of his election campaign (implied rather than specific)? Correct me if I'm wrong, but America have voted for this as well, even if they have been sold a dud. I tend towards disagreeing with a fair chunk of his argument by the way, but I am surprised by how surprised the world is....

Not really a surprise as Trump was pretty much stating as much from before he was the republican candidate. The only surprise was the no committal withdraw language, leaving the door open for renegotiation or even re-entry. My bet, is he's looking for something he can sell as a win now, and possibly a win later.

Politician gets reviled for fulfilling election pledge. Whatever next?

To be fair, it's rare these days.

People who think that what they throw away or belch out makes a jot of difference are frequently (or would be, if the bothered to read about it) surprised to discover that we are living in an ice age and that for the vast majority of the last 100 million years the planet has been 10-15 degrees warmer than this. In fact it only got cold enough to have ice at the poles because South and North America joined at the Panama Isthmus a few million years ago cutting off the warm water flow between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

I don't think they would recognise a Milankovic cycle if it bit them on the arse, either.

Governments don't want people understanding any of this.
