He's a right back. We are short in that department in my opinion. Yes we could do with another striker but sitting on the bench at Palace in case Benteke gets injured is a pretty hard sell unless we want to throw 80k a week at someone average. Support the team and try and understand why certain decisions are made rather than just moaning all the time - that isn't directed as a personal attack on you, more an observation at the constant moaning on here.

Fosuh-Mensah seems to be able to fit into RB, and Kelly is a respectable cover when needed. No excuse to covet yet another defender.

Does FdB think that letting in 10 goals already is a sign of a defender-drought

Yeah Kelly at full back last year was fantastic. Sarcasm aside he wasn't much better on the right than he was on the left - I imagine he'd have Vietnam style flashbacks if he was asked to play full back again. Fosu-Mensah is an interesting one though, does anyone actually know his best position? I've not seen much of him till he came to us and assumed he was a right back but I've heard left back, center back etc.

You are misunderstanding me again. If we are going to go out an buy some average player that wont be good enough, why even bother? Just use one of the utility players or some youth. A decent example of a inbetween player is Jordan Mutch - 5 million is fairly modest in this market yet no one on here (including me) would say that was even close to a good idea.

I just think that we are lucky to have a board that actually give a f**k and rather than always assuming the worst we should believe that they did what they could. I'm not blindly following the club and not criticising, I'm a season ticket holder so have to put up with the rubbish week in week out and trust me I moan but you have to be realist too and understand where we are as a club.

We can assume the worst if Benteke gets injured on Saturday.

'Just use one of the utility players', 'or some youth' for 4 months.

Shaking my head to your posts on this thread remind me of hearing 'get stuck in, put a tackle in' when Benteke is near the opposition with the ball. No I'd rather he didn't put himself at any risk.

We had since releasing Campbell that we needed striker cover, not 2 weeks ago. Have you ever played for a team when all your forwards have been injured? Just relying on someone who's not a forward or just big to hold the ball up? The feeling of defeat before you even start is what you always remember.

Right backs should be, in order:

Mensah > Ward > Kelly.

Rudi Hedman said a wise thing last season - Pardew playing Kelly at LB nearly destroyed him. Up till then he was a decent journeyman RB.

I would rather him covering RB with a recognized striker on the bench than Sagna there and Chung Lee warming up for Benteke.

If he gets injured on Saturday it will be a disaster I completely agree, my point is people assume that there were better options available and we did nothing to sign them rather than having a little faith that we tried. Everybody slagged Campbell off constantly but now its a disaster that we don't have him. I'd love us to have signed another striker, I really would but find some of the suggested transfer targets on here as laughable as you seem to find my optimism.

Agreed, it was like watching a descent into madness, poor sod didn't stand a chance and it killed his confidence completely - still see him as a center back and certainly not a wing back though.

And for clarity I totally agree, another striker should be the priority rather than another right back but only if the right option is available, no sense wasting money on some crap that is going to be a worse option than one of our utility players. I just wonder who would come to Palace and sit on the bench knowing their only chance is if Benteke gets injured.

Shane Long I didn't find very laughable. I also don't find 4 months to sign a striker very laughable either.

There was a relentless Sakho bandwagon all Summer. Where was the 2nd striker bandwagon?

Same as the 2nd left back one. Same thing all over. Man does Steve parish need to hand the football side over to someone. And not freedman. He's a scout, not an experienced dof or dos a prem club should have.

Can Sagna play as a wing-back? If so I'd take this as a sign that the failed experiment was maybe doomed to continue.
