Jim Cannon is a God, Wright is a tw*t.

Cleaary never saw Wright play for Palace then which makes your comment invalid.

Sorry I've been watching Palace since 1970. I stick by my comment. He sounds a right whinger.

There seemed to be issues between the old guard - Cannon, Droy and Wood - and the youngsters coming through.

Most of the youngsters were black so there could have been an element of racism as it was the 80s.

Cannon was particularly vocal in his criticism of Wright in the early days, Wood supposedly tried to have a fight with Gray at a pre-season tour (Gray barricaded himself in his room!!) and supposedly Gavin Nebbeling head butted Bright in training. All of these are in Wright's book.

All this was not helped by Coppell allowing a 5 aside competition each week between the whites and blacks in the team - played on a Friday (the day before a match!!).

Incidentally Coppell kept Cannon as a regular for his first 4 or so seasons, always as captain so I don't think any of the incidents above influenced Coppell's team decisions

Well if there was a set to between Wright, Gray and Finnegan and Cannon, Wood and Droy I know who my money would of been on!!

Finnegan is a vile little prick from experience.

I knew Cannon quite well. I was at school and mates with his son. His daughter was in my sister's year to. He lived in a big house in Hooley. I always found him to be a nice fella, but quite intimidating at the same time.

Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!!

Think there may have been an element of the ol' racism involved as well.

Based on what exactly?

Heres what Ian Wright said in his book about it:

Wrighty reveals that when he first joined Palace on a three-month contract in 1985, he had a bad time at the hands of a clique of older players led by goalkeeper George Wood, Micky Droy and Jim Cannon.

“Jim Cannon was the worst,”he maintains. “The big Scottish centre half had been at the club forever and behaved like the playground bully, always ready with a little dig or snide remark.

“It seemed like every time I thought I was making progress, he was there to knock me down.”

Friction between the pair boiled over one morning in a training ground spat which involved punches being thrown.

Another episode came after a match at Grimsby Town where visiting players always used to receive a parting gift of a large fresh fish to take home.

In the hope that it would placate Cannon, Wright acceded to a request to hand his fish over even though he knew the gift would have delighted his mum

To no avail. “Jim Cannon took the fish, then on Monday was back to his regular, miserable bullying self.”
