Christmas...tsk tsk tsk As a member of the progressivesphere, I’m privy to a number of conversations that you ordinary Brits couldn’t hope to understand. One current hot topic among those of us who matter in this country is the future of Christmas. Yes, I realize that in 1939, Churchill proclaimed that "Christmas is a season not only of rejoicing but of reflection." But please, If Churhchill were alive today, he’d be a confirmed atheist and a proponent of true Christianity. So-called “Christians” pretend to believe in the “Bible,” but how many have considered whether the turkey or ham is kosher? Whether they follow the Bible’s dietary restrictions, or not? [Link] As a forward-thinking progressive, one aspect of human nature that I will not budge on is this: the white nuclear family (or really any nuclear family, for that matter) is one of the most regressive institutions in our modern, international society. According to modern science, every person needs to be willing to copulate with every other person, at all times. This isn’t “morality,” it’s science. I truly believe that humanity can get beyond this roadblock. But it’s going to take a whole lot more giving and a bit less thanks.

As a member of the progressivesphere, I’m privy to a number of conversations that you ordinary Brits couldn’t hope to understand. One current hot topic among those of us who matter in this country is the future of Christmas.
Yes, I realize that in 1939, Churchill proclaimed that "Christmas is a season not only of rejoicing but of reflection." But please, If Churhchill were alive today, he’d be a confirmed atheist and a proponent of true Christianity. So-called “Christians” pretend to believe in the “Bible,” but how many have considered whether the turkey or ham is kosher? Whether they follow the Bible’s dietary restrictions, or not?

As a forward-thinking progressive, one aspect of human nature that I will not budge on is this: the white nuclear family (or really any nuclear family, for that matter) is one of the most regressive institutions in our modern, international society. According to modern science, every person needs to be willing to copulate with every other person, at all times.

This isn’t “morality,” it’s science.

I truly believe that humanity can get beyond this roadblock. But it’s going to take a whole lot more giving and a bit less thanks.

Very amusing. It does beg the question, what is Christmas all about? I have assumed it has a pagan origin in terms of timing but the idea put forward that the Cult of Mithras was a key factor in it has been put into question by researchers and the idea that pagans celebrated the equinox is a little flimsy as well. Jesus' claim to the day was obviously a later interpretation, so we are stuck with a piss up, lots of food and a gathering of clans, which I expect it was probably all about in the first place.

Very amusing. It does beg the question, what is Christmas all about?

I have assumed it has a pagan origin in terms of timing but the idea put forward that the Cult of Mithras was a key factor in it has been put into question by researchers and the idea that pagans celebrated the equinox is a little flimsy as well.
Jesus' claim to the day was obviously a later interpretation, so we are stuck with a piss up, lots of food and a gathering of clans, which I expect it was probably all about in the first place.
