It doesn't take a masters degree in hindsight studies to see that the renewal / extension of Wickham's contract was a big mistake. It is extraordinary to think that the same mistake could happen with Benteke, who is totally finished at this level.

I for one was very excited when we signed him, thinking wow Benteke at Palace!! So after one decent season we have come to this, I kind of feel sorry for the guy as I sure this is NOT what he wants at all. Facts are we paid a lot of money for him and an extension may and I again say may make sense as his alleged value will increase due to a contract. Anyway was a big mistake and we should all move on and try and help the guy in any way us fans can.

We insist on passing the ball in front of the defence to his feet. All our corners are aimed at the far post to Tompkins. Pardew and BFS had Puncheon behind him two support him, Roy wont do that. Simple fact is that Roy had got to take more risks against weaker teams. 0-0 with Colchester, 1-0 v Grimsby (with 10 men, 0-1 v Sheffield United etc.

I can't believe people complain about Hodgson's tactics and say he can't hack it in the PL any more, then we see demands that we should be hitting early crosses to a lump and hoping he wins a header.

Just watched the 'highlights' from last night. Can't quite believe how Benteke's shot didn't go in off of the crossbar tbh. Sometimes you just can't catch a break. Although the argument I guess would be he's had 50 games to catch a break! Still that chance did seem to defy the laws of physics. Edited by samprior (28 Aug 2019 10.06am)

Surely, his alleged value will never increase if he is a striker who can't score no matter how long a contract he has. The best we can hope for is free transfer to anyone so that we do not have pay his inflated salary anymore. We were the mugs who bought him when clearly Klopp knew he was rubbish otherwise would not have let him go. As for Wickham, why on earth we extended his contract when he gets injured putting on his boots is beyond me, but then again can't understand what Parish objectives are, everything he touches these days seems to go sour, footballers, Managers or Women, they all like to keep well away from him!

All this bs about if we sign him to a new contract his value will increase only works if a club is willing to pay , match or increase his wages and Tekkers agrees. So we resign 4 years, 2 mill sign on fee then another 130k a week (5m a year). What team will pay 15 m plus match his wages ? A striker that doesn’t score and provides zero week in week out year on year. Tekkers signs on the dotted line pockets a nice 20m plus contract and carries on doing nothing for 4 more years.
