Man is the most insane species. He worships an invisible God and destroys a visible Nature. Unaware that this Nature he’s destroying is this God he’s worshipping.

Brexiteers love a bit of meat. Yummy.

Of course, Britain has some of the most rigorous guidelines for care of animals and hygiene.

Just how much meat would we import from the states then? The answer...very little if any due to the fact we produce enough of it ourselves, and wouldnt accept anything that didnt already satisfy our existing standard.

For me a nice bit of dirty meat marinated in lots and lots of milk would be great.

Patrick Minford doesn't agree with you. He assumes cheap imports will kill off our own farming industries and "benefit" consumers given the cheaper prices. While his assumptions are all stupid and improbable, there has to be genuine concern that a behind closed doors sweetheart deal with the US would see our standards slashed and burned to allow this shoddy meat in, which would end up in ready meals, school canteens, cafés and the like where consumers have little choice or information over the provenance of the meat in question. Rather more worrying are the practices employed en masse across the US and to a lesser extent here, of routinely administering antibiotics to livestock to prevent illness and promote unnatural growth. 2/3 of all antibiotic usage worldwide is in the farming industry and is fast creating antibiotic resistant bacteria, and reducing the future efficacy of all antibiotics across the globe. This could easily lead to a situation in a couple of decades where illnesses that are treatable today will no longer be treatable and lifespans will start shortening again.

This is in addition to the impact on personal health from eating this meat, which is linked to higher instances of cancer, bowel disease and heart problems.

I hope that these practices will be eradicated and whatever happens with Brexit we increase the regulations of food safety and animal welfare. Meat should only be organic and free range and only eaten once a week tops for us to live healthily and sustainably and our regulations should be pushing the farming industry towards such a goal.

I'd suggest those of us who eat meat should be more concerned about this than vegans.

So you don't agree with the "economic case for Brexit" then? I quite concur.

Isn't it the suggestion that at some time we may adopt these practices ourselves, not being party to EU standards anymore ?.

The EU has high standards and we have contributed to them.

You don't find it all suspicious that a vegan (if I have remembered correctly that is) decides this is "news"?

I'm not concerned at all, we don't buy pigs or chicken from the USA. And the beef that we have had from other parts of the EU has never had any sort of problems, has it? Neigh.....
