I didn't want to start a new thread so will post here. Only saw the highlights of the friendly, but Guaita spilled the ball from a shot that he maybe should have held for their goal. He did however make a couple of excellent saves. If he is as good as the reports about him I think we are in safe hands this season (pun intended).

I think we have to distinguish between "best" and most "successful". I think standards have gone up across the board in football since the early 90s, and the Palace team that finished 3rd in the old first division would never achieve that feat now (if they could all be transported back to the age they were then). I believe our current side is generally a stronger team, but, it is unlikely it will be more successful than the 1990-1991 side - unless we can finish runners-up in the Premier!

Back then top clubs weren’t spending £80 million or the equivalent on the near world’s best so 3rd then might be 6th or 5th now because really you should finish above one of the big 6 for it to be more impressive.

The measure of a team is how it performs rather than who is in it. I thought our 1973/74 team would be fantastic, but it was relegated from the old Division 2. I’ll therefore reserve judgement until the current team has played a few meaningful games, but its potential is exciting.

If all key players stay fit, I'll be confident of a top half finish. If Benteke hits 15+ goals (not that I would bet on this happening), we could maybe hit 7th. Hard to see us finishing above Arsenal, Chelsea, United, City, Spurs, Liverpool.

Wouldn't have thought our squad depth was all that back then. Likes of Pardew and Phil Barber were still around, weren't they? Puncheon, Riedewald or Williams might be our 25th player this season - with the other two missing out If Zaha gets 25-30 goals he will be our first player sold to Real Madrid or Barcelona

While to have the options of Benteke, Sorloth and Wickham as no. 9s if they can stay fit is not at all bad even if they rotate. Money is too great an influence on the modern game to get us thinking about finishing third as in 90/91, but I think finishing 6-8th would be comparable. Of course, I could just be deluded and we might end up in another relegation scrap, but living in Southampton, I know their fans are clearly not happy about the team's form or lack of summer business. So maybe, just maybe, 'Parish's project' will take us to another record season in the Prem with a new stand to look forward to. After 51 years of supporting Palace through thick and thin, is there a chance that under 'Croydon Boy Roy' we will have our best season yet? I would love it if we did, but that didn't do Kevin Keegan any good! COYP Short Answer, Yes I believe it is the Best since the early 90's. Long Answer, Yes, but its all relative and the teams around us are of similar Qualities (with the exception of the top 5/6) Meaning we are on Par bar a couple of teams.

Townsend has reached a good consistency over several years. never knew Martyn was a converted winger. or I did & forgot.
