Quality of commentary and punditry

I should start by stating that I am an older supporter and long term football fan, so perhaps my view could be deemed old fashioned. However, I am dismayed by the deterioration of quality in commentary and punditry in media outlets. I remember commentators such as Peter Jones and Mike Ingham who were serious, informative and knowledgeable. Now everybody wants to be a comedian, indulge in ‘banter’and the match itself is almost a sideshow. So many ex footballers seem to have taken a career in the media as an easy living but don’t offer any added value and they can’t be objective for fear of criticising ex teammates. It’s got to the stage where I have to watch with the sound down and skip the punditry sections.

As soon as I saw the title of your topic I thought of Peter Jones, a great commentator. Others who I remember on the radio, not necessarily the commentator but worked beside them are Jimmy Armfield & Bryon Butler but where both great at what they did. I haven't listened to a football match on the radio for a while, just bits & pieces of it. The pyramid to beat all pyramids!! Neville has taken it to the next level. Commentary for me is much the same as it ever was. Vive le Roy!
