In 1820 94.4 lived in extreme poverty. In 2015 that figure has come down to 9.6. Without capitalism you'll never have enough money to have any socialist type programmes like free at the point of delivery healthcare and free education and all the other public services.

Honestly, people like Corbyn that go on about how capitalism has failed us need to really look at how politician incompetence has failed us. I wouldn't class capitalism above socialism or the other way around, but believe that socialism will be the end result of a successful capitalist project. Edited by Jway89 (01 Oct 2018 11.44am)

Socialism is a disaster as an economic system but parts of it are useful as a moral philosophy.....for example, representation for the poor. However, full blown socialism is very much an social constructionist ideology rather than a practical system that takes account of human nature. Edited by Stirlingsays (01 Oct 2018 12.08pm)

Well...Yes, but it wasn't a socialist state paying for them....but yea, as a means of regulating capitalism socialism has had benefits. It has some merits as a moral philosophy.....though unchecked it's created the messes we see coming out of the humanities in our universities. I don't see that being voluntary myself. However, the coming computer automation from AI is going to wipe out most blue collar work and quite a lot of white collar work as well. The future will certainly be different and will need different solutions.
