Taking top players in on loan is a good thing even if it is difficult to replace them when they return to their mother club. The loss is no different to losing a new purchase to long term injury ( eg Connor Wickham ).

Due to the World Cup plus the shortened transfer window RLC didn’t have a long time to make his decision but he opted to try his luck staying at Chelsea which so far has been a big mistake for him and bad news for us. Hopefully he will change his mind in January.

The loan system needs changing to limit how many players a club can loan out which would stop clubs like Chelsea from manipulating the market.

We are missing Cabaye this year but I think we are missing RLC more. Go back and watch the 5-0 against Leicester and you will see just how important and quality the guy was for us.

Getting loan players in that you cannot buy is the ultimate short term move in football. Now we have not only a Cabaye shaped hole, which is impacting Luka big time, but we have a massive gap where RLC was.

Getting these loan players in looks great at face value but when you start to rely on them, and they become integral to your system, you have to expect a hangover when they disappear.

Loaning players from big clubs is great for the player and the big club, but If we don’t have an option to buy it’s a short term move for us that can then bite us hard.

Watch that Leicester game again.

I disagree, Luka is making un forced errors nothing to do with cabaye. Mcarther is firing on all cylinders ok?

I disagree with "Loaning players you cannot buy, a fools errand" as if one uses the system well it benefits all parties. Our problem is that we haven't used the system as well as some of the other clubs and we take on strikers with a terrible record of injuries then complain when he's out for most of the season injured.

I do agree that clubs should be limited in the number of players that they can loan out and believe that the authorities are looking at this at the moment which will be extremely painful for Chelsea who have over 40 players out on loan

If you accept that we will have 1-2 quality loan signings each season then it's not a short term fix, it's part of our strategy to have a squad that can compete in the Prem and fits our finances.

If we hadn’t used the loan system we’d probably still be in the Championship ! Wilf was our best loan ever without doubt!

I definitely get that sentiment but how often do managers, players and ex-players talk about familiarity with teammates being a huge factor.

When you get someone like RLC in you basically have a 10% chance of getting them permanently, if that. Hoping for such a player to be really successful at the club seems totally counter intuitive to me.

Its the ultimate in short term, lack of "joined up" thinking. If the guy does well, especially in the opponents half, then he disappears there is going to be a hangover period.

Just watch that Leicester game, I know its only 1 game, and their heads dropped and they went down to 10, but the way we passed and moved in that game was a million miles from what we saw yesterday.

We havent replaced Cabaye which is criminal (we have some career criminals working in our player recruitment dept) but the lack of power, dynamism, great passing and forward thinking from RLC is really hurting us.

We had so long to replace both players and we failed, based on how things look currently. I would rather just have 1 hole in midfield, rather than a 2nd one which is self inflicted.

Time to have a long term strategy at our club, and that should not include loaning world class players we cannot buy IMHO.

I dont understand this. Meyer played the holding role for Shalke last season. the same position Cabaye played for us. Shalke finished 2nd last year or summat. Why he isn't starting I have no idea but we did replace Cabaye.

Absolutely agree but where is our strong, skillful, high quality midfield player for this loan season?

On the whole our loan business has been poor. If we get in similar types of players each year then this could be called a long term strategy, trouble is we don’t do anything like that.

When you build systems around temporary players you are going to struggle when they leave. I believe we are unable to carve out any clear goal scoring opportunities right now because our midfield is not functioning as it did towards the back end of last season, as per that Leicester game. A big part of that problem is we don’t have anyone remotely similar to RLC in the squad this year.

It was nice to see him play for us last year, but not so nice this year to see what I believe is a problem tactically caused by him not being around anymore.

Something has changed big time from the end of last season to the start of this one, I am sure we can all agree on that at least. We looked hopeless against Wolves,

Trump lost. Badly. Hahahahahahaha.

I fully support loans with an option to buy.

No problem, We've got some really difficult teams out of the way and now we've got a few easy ones ahead!
By December 2nd we will have less points as at the same stage last season. I thought we were learning lessons. A recent championship team turns us over on Saturday. If Zaha goes, so do we!
Like a lot of us, I'm very worried that at this stage of the season, we haven't picked up 3 points at home yet. Something wrong here!
We've been talking about a decent striker for two seasons and yet we've got a team of mid-fielders who can't score goals either. Please, where is the direction or lack of it coming from?
And to think we've got till January before we can 'solve' the problem. It will be too late by then I'm afraid.
Palace, Cardiff and Huddersfield for the drop based on start of the season showings. Sorry fellow Eagles fans, but lost points thus far will cost us dearly come May. Just think, we got rid of Murry and Gayle, nor great, but a hundred times better than what we've got. Just not good enough for the Eagles loyal fans who pay good prices to see their team perform.
On the other hand we might turn it around against Chelsea as we did last season.

I would agree to a certain extent; especially if there was NO CHANCE of getting said player afterwards. What I would say though is by targeting players on the fringes of the top 4 squads, they at least will have a better understanding of our club should a chance that they would move come up (as I think is the case with RLC)

but things move so fast in football nowadays squads never really stay the same, we couldav purchased him for 20m instead of loaning and had to sell him in the summer because his stock had risen...as it happens the majority of the squad has stayed the same.

have you been watching a different max mayer to me this season as i would say he is a cabaye replacement in my eyes, with the potential to be a better player than cabaye was in his pomp.

there is a lot of negativity recently due to our average start, for a while now we have always struggled against the teams who are happy to sit in & go compact, you cite leicester as an example but they arnt one of those teams, we always seem to do better against the teams who dont set up to contain us but set up to play their game.

i completely agree we need a long term strategy, but for that we need a long term manager and a “les reed” like at southampton, we also need a conveyer belt of academy graduates, because this transfer market is utterly f***ed up & .: i still think its ok to take the big boys boy wonders as it helps us & it helps them!
