This is exactly the problem.

Meyer may be too good for us, in a way:

If he was playing at Man City for example he wouldn’t have a lot of defensive duties, and every pass that would come into him would be perfectly weighted and into space. He would the have runners in and around and high quality players in all directions to build an attack with.

He would probably look sh*t hot in that setup, and the German Messi stuff would pop up again. He is the type of player that can look amazing in possession based football with world class players around him.

Trouble is, well, you can guess the rest.

Signing him as a defensive mid in the Cabaye mold was a mistake, as he has nowhere near enough in the tackle. Signing him as an RLC type operating wide was also a mistake as he doesn’t play wide.

He needs to play centrally in front of 2 holding midfielders for us to see anything like his best output. However RH is a 442 man.

Begs the question why did we sign him but we know the answer, because he was free.

Trump lost. Badly. Hahahahahahaha.

Amazing the variety in opinions, including that from Roy:

It's incredible he should say this, Meyer played several killer through balls that our dopey front line weren't aware of, I can't remember him playing a duff pass and he was being played well out of position.

It surprises me someone with Roy's experience would come out and make statements like this, and it's worrying that he's making "pub fan" comments and doesn't seem able to see that the players around him had the touch of a trampoline.

This is akin to people saying Townsend is having a s*** season, when you see him putting in 2-3 crosses a game that any half-decent league two striker would be on the end of.

He thrown Meyer under the bus hasn't he? Wow. Play the poor sod out of position without an outlet - Ayew isn't a target man - and say he's not played well?

The reason why the crowd booed was because we could see Meyer was playing quite well. Schlupp did have a good 20 mins whether that was because of purely his own play or the different dynamic after Sorloth it is hard to say.

I've not been impressed with Roy this season, the reluctance to make subs, playing two cloggers in midfield (though actually I thought they played ok on Saturday).

I would be surprise if Meyer started to wonder whether he should get a transfer to a team willing to play him in the middle - either deep or further forward.

He is too small and not overly fast so the game seems to pass him by.

If we had more possession he might start having an influence on the game but this will rarely happen.

Either play him in the middle or not at all

I agree with this

Thought Meyer was super against Man U - by far his best game. Think the bigger pitch gave him a bit more room and he linked up great with Zaha and Townsend. Given he is only young i think we have ourselves a proper premiership player.

I think he'll get better and better, people forget he has to adapt to a new country as well as a new football club,it won't happen overnight.

he is starting to develop into the player we thought we had signed, it qas always. going to take a few months for. young foreign lad to adapt to the PL.

we genuinally could have a future star on our hands.

Absolutely! He played really well in a more advanced position yesterday. Not everything worked but most did. He is beginning to settle in to the team and I can see him and Wilf developing a good rapport; but these things take time. If you don’t make mistakes you don’t get better!

How many Eagles fans would switch him for Pogba?

Always remembering walking from the Holmesdale to the Whitehorse end at half time!

I missed the game. What was his position and role in what formation?

I thought he was incredible yesterday. He played on the left when defending and more centrally when we had the ball.

I've been saying since the Bournemouth match (where I thought he controlled the game in the middle) that he should be playing more centrally, but for some reason he has been stuck on the left where he doesn't look comfortable at all.

But credit to Roy, I thought it was genius yesterday how he ensured that Meyer defended on the left but was given a license to move more central when we had the ball - and I feel it made all the difference yesterday. It also allowed PVA to push up more than he usually would.

Brilliant game yesterday, it has given me a positive feeling going forward. We wouldn't have been at all surprised yesterday if United blew us off the park with the quality they had on show - but it was us, and us only who made them look ordinary.
