A warning for any fellow smokers - Iím just back from two weeks in Trump-land. Every time I went to buy some smokes at Walgreens I was asked for id. At first I thought they were joking (Iím 60 and a lifetime of CPFC related stress has left its mark). Maybe I shouldíve been flattered but knocking 42 years off is a bit strong.
Coincidentally I bought 400 duty frees and was given 200 extra free.

You should change your name to 'Cliff Richard Eagle'.

On second thoughts, perhaps that's not such a good idea.

I think its more a fear of litigation as to why they ask for ID.
I often have to show ID just to buy Stanley knife blades.

Iím sure youíre right but itís never happened to me before before - I was asked for my date of birth in California ten years ago but didnít have to prove it. I know bar staff in America face serious consequences for serving underage drinkers but this seemed daft.

Fear of litigation in the States. I find that somewhat far-fetched.

People get sued here for the smallest of things. So actually not as far fetched as you think.

Presumably the reason airlines take so much trouble over people who are allergic to peanuts which happens on a surprisingly large number of flights. Odd that they think nothing of serving tea and coffee when turbulence could result in a burning face full of it.

I heard another example of this sort of thing from a lady in my local. Sheís 72 and in the early stages of Parkinsonís; she was refused service in a bar in Tennessee because she didnít have photo id.

My guess is to protect themselves they ask everybody that way they cannot be sued for discrimination against one group or another.

Anyone who has sold alcohol in the UK will tell you that the company makes it clear it's down to you and if you make a mistake you pay the fine and any other consequences including getting fired. In other words the shops and bars wipe their hands of it.

As the fine is over £100 I don't blame staff who may go over the top why should they risk it when they are hung out to dry by their employer.

I witnessed a member of staff in Weatherspoons get done on a test purchase. It was a joke there is no underage drinking problem in my spoons he made a mistake.

Meanwhile the real culprits which are the mini markets get away it we had one in Beckenham that got done time after time and should have been closed down by the police / council.
