thought I'd put a Jim Cannon post up … been watching the old stuff, loved him as a rock like player, the odd flash of skill here and then I thought but more of a proper old fashioned centre half, but Big Mal had him as marauding left back, and wing back, my older eyes now tell me the boy could really play moreso than the younger me appreciated. HOWEVER, lovely link here showing Jimbo's debut v Chelsea, I knew he scored the second, I didn't realise what a great header it was, but he was 17 years old, built like a man though, and the first ten minutes of his first team career are amazing, kicked the late great Peter Osgood up in the air twice and got booked - should have been sent off - totally fearless letting Ossie 'know he was there'. The opening credits to this link will put a tear in your eye, the Big Match music is out of date though, the one you'll here came in the season after, but magical clips to that theme music. Enjoy …

Great clip and remember it well, I was on the Holmesdale and had Chelsea supporting relatives at the game too. Think Jim would have been 19.

Says Jim was 19. Funny I thought he was younger as well.

Great bit of footage. Noticed Kember was playing for Chelsea.

Fantastic theme tune, had forgotten that.

Sunday was sit down with mum, dad and squirt for a roast, watch The Big Match then straight out in the street kicking a ball with ya mates until you were told to come in because you've got school tomorrow

Great days

Seem to remember the family driving 90 miles to Broadstairs to see Nan & Grandad that weekend, as we often did.
Got all excited watching one of our rare wins that season, against a good Chelsea team too, but we didn't stay up in the end. The next few years were the 'dark days' as we slipped into Div.3 the following season.

That game was the only one I went to with my cousin who was a Chelsea fan; he expected us to get a royal stuffing. Wasn’t it the first time we beat a London team in the first division?

Yes. The first and only time in that spell in the top flight, I believe.

Great header and fantastic 1st game for Jim. Wtf were Chelsea wearing, some sort of homage to Hungary? Chelsea also had Brian Bason lining up for them, who is possibly the worst player I have seen in a Palace shirt during those dark days of the early eighties.
I wish I could see Jim Cannon's wonder goal against Ipswich in 1979 to see us go top of the table!
