Have to disagree there with my friend, a club CANNOT 'release' a player if they are still under contract. They can transfer them, or, terminate contract by 'mutual consent'.

Not sure how thatís disagreeing; releasing,in football/transfer terms, refers to letting someone go at the end of their contract - thatís what the discussion is about.

Again, I have to make the distinction between being sold and being released. Mooy was not released.

The only reason a relegated club releases someone is;

a) they can no longer afford the wages
b) they donít consider them good enough.

I donít think wages were the issue here.

A player deemed not good enough for the second tier in Germany, nor the Danish league, is certainly not good enough for us.

This is the Mooy situation, but I'm trying to explain to you that there are also instances where the relegated player was released and snapped up free.

Wasn't Jermain Defoe taken free by Bournemouth after Sunderland went down?

Ki-Sung Yeong from Swansea to Newcastle.

Eric Choupo-Moting from Stoke to PSG.

etc.

As far as I know, changes to the list can be made until September 2. So, names like Riedewald and Innis and even Martin Kelly could dissappear from the final list, making room for more free players who could join and get into the 25.

Or am I wrong? Many playwrs from PL teams will still leave on loan to leagues like the Eredivisie or the Serie A, because the transfer window hasn't closed there. They will leave spaces for their teams which could be occupied by a different player.

Right, and all of those examples full under option a; the relegated club could not afford to meet the wage demands.

This guy, quite clearly is an option b - not good enough.

You're sayibg "not good enough" like in the case there was an option there. No, there is no option on the squad for a left footed Townsend backup.

There is no such thing as not good enough when anything is better than nothing.

At least that Callum Roberts 22 year old fellow could het a contract for the Reserve team and make some appearances with the main squad. He at least deserves a trial.

Club could gain a home grown English player, which is very important in making the 25 list.

The other players who impressed in the Premier League 2 alongside him have already gotten their opportunity. There were Harry Wilson, Ollie McBurnie, Ben Woodburn, Chris Willock (recently starter in Araenal's first fixture), Kieran Dowell, Daniel James (bought by Man Utd), Reiss Nelson, Brahim Diaz (Real Madrid), TAA, Bukayo Saka (great Araenal hope), Angel Gomes of Man Utd, Rabbi Matondo (bought by Schalke for 9 million from City), Rafael Camacho (from Liverpool to Sporting for 5 million though Klop didn't want to let him).

So this Callum Roberts is the last one left. And a free player, which is kind of a blessing.

Bonkers approach. We donít have a back up for half the team; it doesnít mean we should just go and buy random players who arenít good enough for the sake of it - you canít believe that this guy would offer more covering for Townsend than Schlupp, Meyer or Macca just solely because heís left footed.

Callum Roberts the 22 year old with 16 professional league games under his belt; 3 for Gateshead, 3 for Colchester and 10 for Kilmarnock - yeah he sounds like exactly what we need.

Utterly, utterly bonkers.

We have a backup for every position except for the one we're talking about here, left footed right wing.

And do Callum Roberts' matches in the PL2 don't matter? Youth level, but it's at least League Two difficulty. And he did amazingly, you probably have no idea because you don't watch it.

But where do you think all youthbplayers come into PL squads from? By this thinking, that he only has a few matches at senior level, you would probably refuse Reiss Nelson, Chris Willock, Rabbi Matondo and Ben Woodburn too.

And why do you think that is?

In fact, why do you think Newcastle declined to offer him a new deal?

Painful.

No, itís not at least League Two difficulty; Roberts couldnít get in the Colchester team last season, who actually are in league two.

You understand that just because two people played in the same league, it doesnít mean they are of equal quality? Putting him on a list with Nelson and Woodbhrm does not make him a better player.

Newcastle graduated Longstaff from their youth side to the first team, yet decided Roberts wasnít even worth a contract, and no one has offered him one since - why could that possibly be?

Maybe not, but taking a player like Callum Roberts on a trial is nothing to lose and everything to possibly win.

He had a 2 month loan at Colchester, so it's not like he coukdn't break onto the squad for an entire season.

I don't know how good he can get over time, but he's still at a decent age (just 1 year older than Willock from Arsenal who made his PL debut for them recently). If Newcastle made a mistake not keeping him in their senior squad or not can only be found out by enlisting him and letting him train and show what he can do here. It's not uncommon for Newcastle or other clubs to make mistakes.

Letís see how his career pans out - Iím very confident heíll never be close to a Premiership player.

Will Lokilo be? Does Lokilo have any numbers in the PL2, League One or League Two?

Nothing personal against Lokilo, would really like for him to make it.

But who should be Townsend backup this season out of the players who are left for free? Lokilo? Or a guy with great numbers at youth level who can come free and maybe....maybe....actually turn out to be at least as helpful as Bakary Sako?

What would be the logical thing for the club to do?
