It’s a similar story at music or comedy shows where most of the audience seem incapable of lasting 10 minutes without a plastic glass of warm lager. Ironically they’re probably the same people who go to pubs to eat rather than drink.

I do find it odd, and I love your last sentence. In my Apollo II story, I forgot to mention that the start time of the movie was 11:15 am. I was still full from my morning porridge!

There was a line in The Thick of It. Something like,
“It’s alright to drink at any time on a train isn’t it? It’s like a casino. Or Cardiff”.

But why do they sell stuff that’s so bloody noisy to eat. Ice cubes rattling, straws slurping, sweets in noisy plastic bags, no point in going if you can’t hear the film
Rarely go these days ,thought Tarantino was okay though. Pitt was very good, some of his films have been awful
Went during a week day once ,had the whole cinema to myself, great I thought, well worth it. Then a noise emanated behind me and some tosser decides to sit directly behind me,,, some odd people out there

In my younger days when pubs closed at 2:30pm and didn't open again until either 5:30 or 6:00pm I knew people who would catch a train to Birmingham and back just so that they could carry on drinking all afternoon

I think that's why Snooker be came so popular in the 80s. When the pubs shut at 2.30pm we would all pile into the snooker club (mainly to carry on drinking)

besides pubs, supermarkets / corner shops would pull a blind down over the booze cabinet from 2.30-5 (7pm? sunday)
I remember there was a corner shop behind the cherry trees pub(through the underpass, if you asked for booze he'd say No, but if you just put the bottle of voddy on the counter it would swiftly go into a bag & he'd sell it.
most handy on sundays between opening times.

Don't forget cricket! The Oval was jammed on hot days even for county games, that doesn't happen any more. There was also the JPS Sunday league all day Sunday drinking, marvelous.

I have already mentioned that I have NO interest whatsover in watching films and this has always been the case.

I recall, probably in the early 80s, agreeing under sufferance to seeing 'Airplane' (Leslie Neilson) with my girlfriend and her mother at the Odeon,Beckenham. Before hand we visited the pub opposite (Cannot recall it's name). I was so enjoying my tipple that I decided to remain in the establishment and the pair went to see the film without me.I certainly wasn't popular at all !
