The reality is that Roy tends to use Max when he wants us to attack a team. Since he doesn't typically want this, he doesn't typically want Max. Max is a bit lightweight if resilience, athleticism and grit are your teams watch words. And they are.

This may sound like bitching but it isn't. We are 9th on 23 points after 17 games with a squad that's not had as much investment as it needs. That's outstanding.

I think this is sort of the point.

Yesterday we were awful for a long period and sadly 1-1 at home to them mugs felt like a win in the end.

As football fans, I do feel we are entitled to moan no matter what but I cannot remember feeling something close to comfortable before April let alone Xmas for a few seasons now and we are looking ok. Main concern is just injuries atm.

Either way... COYP

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Funny enough, in the second half I thought Benteke started to gain confidence, win the air battles and put himself about more

The irony of this is that Trossard is nothing other than a Meyer clone...which is why we should be playing him...Roy clearly doesn't think so. Put Meyer in their squad and he'd excel!

Well I would swap Meyer for Trossard tomorrow, he has far more awareness and closer control than Meyer and doesn’t give the ball away cheaply....

the frustrating thing was how poor our mifdfield was compared to theirs, how our players could not offer options for a pass, and how much sharper they were in closing us down, still roy is getting us to punch well above our weight - if it means we play safety first until injuries subside and we can add to the squad so be it - but Schlupp has started to come good over time and there are signs Benteke is finding a bit of his old spark and Meyer gave a very convincing cameo last night, you can be sure McCarthy will come good too - very committed and capable, if he gets back to his peak form, too early to say whether or not he will, but we'll have a class act committed to the club, not an easy thing to get for a club our size. just hope the hiatus with the owners doesn't screw up our transfer needs in January.

Trossard scored 17 goals for Genk last season and Brighton signed him for £18 Mill.
He has scored over 60 goals in his career, Meyer has scored nowhere near that amount.

True but he played mainly as defensive midfielder who topped the Bundesligua for interceptions . I doubt Trossard did this in Belgium

And Meyer didn’t cost £17 million

The way he uses Meyer is quite clever in some respects.

Aim to muscle a 1-0 win through a tough defensive set up. Should keep it tight and may be successful. High chance of a draw, possibility of leading, low risk of being 2 down on 70 minutes.

If we're chasing a draw from a defeat (like bha) teams will sit back and defend what they have. Meyer can turn it in our favour and will play in the 'right areas' both for him and for Roy. If we're on top in aa draw against a peer team, he's also worth consideration.

As a means of getting points, it's smart.

If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities.

Any neutral watching on Sky expecting a decent game of football would have:
1. Been sorely disappointed
2. Admired Brighton for playing decent stuff
3. Noted that Palace had no idea and were ugly to watch.
4. We were outplayed yet our defence got lucky.
5. A point for us was daylight robbery

People will jump in and say that the result is what counts and staying up by playing ugly if necessary is all that matters. Yes, up to a point, but our sole objective is to survive and consequently our more skilful players don't get much of a look in.

Football is often called 'the Beautiful Game' - watching Palace will soon disabuse you of that feeling ....

I said exactly the same about Meyer.
Can’t knock the points Hodgson has achieved since he has been here, we should stay up by some distance , but there cannot be a team in the league that plays worse football to watch than us.
Was laughing as we walked out how we had ‘nicked a point’, absolutely dominated for 70 odd minutes, we never got a corner until an hour into the game.
Don’t think we have ever played aswell /outplayed a team , as they did, in 7 years in the top league.
The irony being that once they scored , our players seem to grow a foot each, have 2 yards more pace and could easily have won.
Well happy now, but an awful , shocking 70 minutes.

Watford??

Does anyone think the Liverpool fans are crying about how bad they played against Watford , but nicked all 3 points thanks to their keeper and their star player ?

But Trossard is probably on a much lower salary, has a higher resale value and actually plays for his team

Of course not, every team has an off day.

But with Palace our last four games were 'off days' yet we got 8 points and conceded one - very good as far as it went. We had to rely on our keeper and makeshift defence to keep it that way but 4 goals in 3 games shows why we play so defensively and daren't risk using some of our more talented players who can actually pass the ball.

It's ugly but some of us purists hope forlornly for better ....
