Many moons ago, I was due to take a party of visiting American accountants on a day trip. On discovering that none of them had an alarm clock, I innocently offered to go round and 'knock them up' in time to catch the coach. It was only when they reacted with a horrified 'What! All of us!!!!!' that I realised we really were two nations divided by a common language.

Reminds me of the bum bag/f@nny pack ‘whereas one England, f@nny means your minge’’ part in The Office and Micky Flanagan on stage describing how, when he lived in New York he was trying to talk a woman into letting him come in her ‘haaaassss’ (cockney for house)

Marvel comics and American kids shows introduced the American language to a wider UK population in the 1970's. However, it was never main-stream. with media everywhere now, i see the everyday intrusion of Americanisms into the English language by mainstream media.

My sister-in-law in Australia referred to her "Thongs" and I had a vision of her adorning skimpy underwear exposing her rump but alas she was referring to flip-flops which are known by that word in that faraway country. Edited by Willo (17 Feb 2020 9.01am)
