Many moons ago, I was due to take a party of visiting American accountants on a day trip. On discovering that none of them had an alarm clock, I innocently offered to go round and 'knock them up' in time to catch the coach.

It was only when they reacted with a horrified 'What! All of us!!!!!' that I realised we really were two nations divided by a common language.

Working in Australia in the early 80s I was confused when asked by a colleague to “pass the Durex” not knowing it was a brand of sellotape.

Reminds me of the bum bag/f@nny pack ‘whereas one England, f@nny means your minge’’ part in The Office and Micky Flanagan on stage describing how, when he lived in New York he was trying to talk a woman into letting him come in her ‘haaaassss’ (cockney for house)

Marvel comics and American kids shows introduced the American language to a wider UK population in the 1970's. However, it was never main-stream.
Candy, cookies, pants, sneakers, automobile trunks, didn't sit easy with the UK population.

with media everywhere now, i see the everyday intrusion of Americanisms into the English language by mainstream media.
Lockdown, vacation, intern, ,...it's everywhere.

**Note to smokers. Don't ever try to bum a fag in USA.

My sister-in-law in Australia referred to her "Thongs" and I had a vision of her adorning skimpy underwear exposing her rump but alas she was referring to flip-flops which are known by that word in that faraway country.
What we refer to as "Sweets" are called "Lollies" over there.

In Australia, the word 'boo' means 'to return' as you will find out if you throw an ordinary meringue!
