According to the media Brewster's advisors are telling him that Sheffield would be better for his development than either ourselves or Villa and to be honest it's hard to disagree with them.

It's interesting what all of the ITK people make of this as Brewster to Palace was as good as done. I'm not just referring to dazza but to all those journalists who are supposedly close to the club

Isn't it just lovely that teams such as ours are seen as a development route for a player rather than a home? Jeez he is only a kid and plenty of them have failed to produce the goods at this level over the years.

"Yeh, I'll sign", he says resignedly, "I'll hang around for a couple of years and then feck off"

Best left alone I reckon. I am with taylors lovechild, I reckon we need a CF who can bully defences and attract both centre halfs to him, Mitrovic certainly fits the bill there.

I must admit that I didn't read it like that as I saw it that Brewster had a lot of potential that Sheffield United were more likely to bring out in him than we were and nothing at all about only staying for a short while.

I wonder if the board believe that Wilf will remain with us and is happy to play in a front two role. If he does stay and play up front with (currently) Ayew or (probably soon) Batshuayi, where would Brewster fit in? Although we have Bats on loan, it appears we have an option to buy at a fixed price, so presumably we will want to play him as one of our main strikers.

What we need is a young striker who's prepared to be back-up for this year and I don't see Brewster in that role (nor for that matter Edouard, whose name has surfaced again in rumours linking him to us).

Brewster's advisors are probably right if they are indeed suggesting Sheff U as the better option. Sheff U are in danger of doing a Palace of 3 years ago (3 games played no points and no goals so far and it's not as if they've played any top clubs), so need a striker.

I suspect we'll be left with Wickham, so in theory we would have another striker option.

Finally, I think Liverpool want to retain some hold over Brewster for the future but need to get some funds in having bought Thiago and Jota.

I think most people would agree that Sheffield United are currently either punching above their weight or at best at the pinnacle of where they can reach whereas Palace, with the players we have are underperforming. Our potential is certainly greater than that of Sheffield United.

But where is he more likely to play?

Disagree. They are a well supported similar sized club to us with potential to improve. I agree that the players they have exceeded expectations in the first season in the Prem - but that is very much linked to having an excellent manager who was able to get the maximum out of them all. A few good additions to that squad could see them do okay again this season Brewster would be a start.

The buy back deal is not suited to us - so good luck to Sheffield , except when they play us!

Just curious, why isn't a buy back clause suitable to us? The buying club would still make a decent profit?

Exactly. Buying for £17-20M and getting two good seasons out of a player before selling him back for £40M and making a £20M profit sounds like a good deal to me. The £20M would then contribute to purchasing a decent replacement. However, I suspect our hesitation is more to do with Brewster having to compete with Bats and that might present some difficult issues re game time etc. In any event I'd like to see us pursuing him or a decent alternative as we need extra cover up front.

I think a major part of our strategy needs to be buying good young players, getting them to a good standard, and then flogging them for huge profit.

Look at Leicester. Mahrez, Maguire, Drinkwater, Chillwell, even Kante...brilliant work. They will surely sell Maddison soon enough for big bucks. And then no doubt find somebody even better.

Palace simply are not made to be a career home for up amd coming talent. Better to understand that.

If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities.

We are more than likely not even bidding for Brewster. 20 million for a player who could turn out to be the next Dominic Solanke.

As I understand it Pete - It leaves us with no control or say in the timing of the buy back, which impacts negatively on our ability to build a squad for the longer term. If Brewster tears it up for a season Liverpool can pay £40 million and take him back. We wouldn’t be able to keep him longer or sell him for more to another club.
Okay we’d have made £20 million quid - but imo as a now established premier league club we need to be planning for the longer term and most importantly not be beholden to the big boys. They have always cherrypicked our best players - we must at least be able to control the timing and terms if they try to do so.
There is always a counter argument - but this is my view.
