Last season he was at fault for quite a number of goals, often simply due to his lack of pace. This season we've sat deeper and this seems to have helped as he has good positional sense and is an experienced pro. Sentiment aside, it is an area we need to upgrade. Having fullbacks that can get up and down the pitch with pace is becoming increasingly important in the modern game and so, sadly for Ward, it is inevitable he will lose his place sooner or later. He has always stood up when called on and didn't make a fuss when AWB got all the plaudits and took his place and I'm perfectly fine with him keeping his place in the team in the short term.

I have given up trying to understand the hand ball rule I guess my preference would be for something like moving your hand towards the ball or your hand in an unnatural position but how you would define that in a rule I don't know.

It's not VAR that is ruining the game but the rules around it apparently Friend made the correct decision based on the rules but even he didn't think it was morally a penalty.

Anyway this and the offside rule need to be fixed.

Nothing can be done now because results have made a table, if they change the results during season then they'll have to restart the whole thing.

He's been incredibly steady for us over the years and often hasn't had the credit he deserves, a huge contributor to the most successful period in our history and doesn't deserve to be singled out for a ludicrous handball decision.

Once Ferguson is fit Ward will return to being a more than capable back up for us just like he was when AWB emerged beforehand and, should Ferguson get injured, he'll step in and be very reliable again.

He's not the future but is an extremely valuable member of the present and recent past.

Great servant for the club. Deserves respect.
Was the victim of a disgraceful penalty award today, but that cannot disguise his liability.

Youíll often find his prints on goal conceded. His passing is atrocious, his footballing nous too. He more often than not is responsible for a move breaking down.

Sentiment does that keep us in the Premier League. We need a better right-back. I would even place a match-fitness lacking Clyne in their until Ferguson is deemed ready to play.

In over 270 minutes of football this season he has defended against attackers including Calvert-Lewin, Rashford, Ings and Martial who scored 69 goals between them last season. It took a ridiculous VAR decision against him in order to be at fault for any of the goals we've conceded, including United's for which I "blame" Kouyate's wild swing putting him off.

Clyne will not improve in that position, and he isn't our player yet. Ferguson may improve that position, but not immediately. As far as I am concerned whoever we have fit will have to work very hard to displace him.

For the future, yes we need to replace him, but not while he our only ever present defender, surely.

My fear is that a decision going against him like the one during Saturday's game, will potentially knock his confidence and then the haters became all childishly
"I told you so..." on this debate.

Agree. He's been a good servant. He's doing a reasonable job at present, but is limited. If Ferguson does recover fully from his operation, he is likely to become our no. 1 RB some time this season with Ward as back-up.

If Ferguson doesn't recover fully then we will have bought another broken player which would be, shall we say, annoying

Let's all hope he fully recovers and becomes the best RB in the league

Let's see SP and the board trying to line up for a piss in the AW toilets at half time before peddling the new stand. We're the Arthur over here and the facilities are a disgrace

Respect Wardy as a brilliant servant to the club and top professional. Thoroughly decent chap too.
He is not a liability- thatís unfair but I have felt for a couple of seasons that he is a weak link and the avenue for many of our goals conceded. When AWB Emerged as his successor I didnít notice anyone crying for Wardy to come back in.
As many have said on this threat heíll never let us down if called upon and always gives 100%.
But gotta agree he shouldnít be first choice RB if NC and NF (who is also a decent CB) are fit.

Joel Ward is what he is.

He has always been quite poor at stopping the cross, prone to a mental lapse costing a goal chance, and pretty crap coming forward. He does have some qualities though and has had some very good outings for us over the years.

He is a decent squad player but probably shouldnít be starting for a premier league side.

I expect Nathan Ferguson will do an AWB and move ahead of old Wardy soon enough in the pecking order.

Ward has his limitations mainly due to with lack of pace and he is also not great on the ball, but it is very rare he really gets destroyed by a winger because overall he is good defender. I would have absolutely no issues if he was our right back for the season but yes there are definitely players out there.

He is also a better all round defender than Kyle Walker Peters W ho we came close to signing.

For a club our size he is a good no.2. Good back up just too slow. We have been given an injured right back who may recover to replace Ward. Letís hope Ferguson fully recovers and hasnít lost his pace. Letís also hope he cuts it in the premier. Knowing Roy it could be a longer wait.
