They both come off as damaged good really and far from blameless. Depp clearly was asking for trouble by hitching his wagon to someone like Amber Heard. That said, from the available evidence I see no reason to believe that he was an aggressor in the way that it's been painted. So on account of that, I can well understand why he would seek to defend himself.
