He was at Bournemouth the season before last and played 14 times for them in the PL. He wasn't at Bournemouth last season, in fact he never played a single game 2019-20.
His last game prior to joining us was in May 2019 when he played for Bournemouth in their 5-3 defeat against us.

In fact as I recall it we were said to be seriously considering him in the summer of 2019 but interest was terminated by his injury.

I think he's looked fairly solid and gets forward more than Ward. On that point though, Townsend never seems to pass to him unless he absolutely has to, even when it seems like the right option. It does mean Townsend is getting a bit more space (as Clyne pulls a defender away) but I just wonder why he isn't passing to him? Regarding PvA, I don't think it's any coincidence that we're looking more threatening with him back in the team. He seems to get in the opposition box more than our midfield. As well as I think Mitchell has done, he just doesn't carry that threat.

I think Clyne's recent impact on Palace has gone under the radar a little: No fireworks, just defensive consistency, which is exactly what we need.

He offers great defensive solidity - where Ward lacks, tactical nous, has the speed to get himself out of trouble and provides support in the attacking half.

It will take more time to integrate and adjust, but he's already proven real astute signing. Well done to management!

Don't think you've been watching enough of joel ward.
