Our inability to rescue something from the game came down to a lack of quality and tired looking looking players rather than any tactics. The squad's a ticking time bomb and has been for a while.

I nearly fell off my chair when Townsend referred to breaking into the top ten.

The centre-backs should accept a fair bit of responsibility for the first half and Roy, not for the first time this season, bemoaned a lack of willingness / quality to find a forward pass generally.

The comments that the spine of the team didn't really turn up (or just weren't good enough) are true.

Second half the tactics were spot on, the application wasnít , played reasonably well but couldnít get past a good defence, and a first class keeper. It happens we have won matches in that way on a good many occasions . Tactics can only help , Both ,Bats, and Big Bent, could , should even have finished but credit Pope, whatever the tactics were seen to be we could have won , and at least not have lost that game.

We had plenty of very decent opportunities to find that goal, our players would've had a nightmare journey home for sure and yes Pope is a brilliant keeper should be number one for our national side.

What struck me yesterday was the fact we struggled so much to retain possession in the first half and in the second seemed confused of how to actually attack the Burnley goal despite a lot of possession in their half.

My conclusion was that usually when we gain possession in a game, we look straight to Wilf. When he's not there, it seemed as though no-one knew what to do with the ball.

Makes you wonder if they run attacking drills or actually have any tactical instruction at all?

That's how I saw it too. There were several occasions when we had several players moving forward and the player on the ball didn't know who to pass it too and lost it by reason of their hesitation or took the safe option and passed back or sideways. Really frustrating.

McArthur didn't even overhit it....it was a great, teasing ball across the face of the goal. Michy should've anticipated it better and got on the end of it.

I agree with the match pundit and others who said McArthur overhit it. Had Batshuayi moved any earlier he would have been offside.

Fair enough. All opinions. I just think the midfielder puts the ball along the box like that...he can't do much more. Onus must be on the striker to get there.

A lot of very glib comments on here about what could/should have been. We scored zero goals against a very poor team and got exactly what we deserved out of the match. Poor team selection from the start. Burnley like to bully so we should have started with Benteke and Schlupp who are two of our more physical players aerially and if they wanted Eze in the team then he needed to be more central.

Look at the replay and see the lack of first balls won and the inability of our front line to hold up the ball. Itís so easy to see and I put that down to the managers tactical selections.

Spot on post. Unfortunately I'm expecting a similar performance against Newcastle, hopefully the boys prove me wrong...

Burnley are struggling at the moment with confidence yes but they are not an easy team to break down, we had opportunities and you fully know we should've taken one of them at least, yes Benteke would've been better with the long balls out and holding up play but that sadly is all he can do at the moment, he can't find space for himself or anyone else and heading and shooting is too easy for defenders to read, he needs to drop a league these things happen, What would you have changed for this game?

Something Iím afraid Roy would never consider. I would have started Schlupp left, Townsend right, Benteke up the middle and Eze playing where he should be, off of and slightly behind Benteke. With Wilf out that would have given us more balance and added a bit of steel in the air, so that we didnít just have the ball coming back at us every time the ball went forward above chest height.

In such a format who you pick as the supporting central midfielders is pretty much up for grabs however given the way we know how Burnley were going to play I would probably have stuck with Riedewald and McArthur (maybe bringing Cahill back into CH and Kouyate stepping up to take McArthurís role as an alternative).

My main point is that Burnley knew exactly what we were going to do and out played us, out muscled us and sat back once they scored playing on the knowledge our standard one dimensional style of attacking was not good enough to break them down.

Yes we had a few decent chances, but so did they. I am of the opinion we didnít deserve any more than we took from that game. What I will say however is that the overall performance was better than in the Chelsea and Brighton games even though we picked up a fortuitous point against the weed.

Anyway, bring on the Newcastle match and letís see if there are any tactical changes made to how we set up and the personnel used in Wilfís absence.

Iíve listened to the post match interview with Hodgson and the problem he identified in the first half was that there were too many passes back to our keeper followed by launch of the long ball.
This was clearly evident and played into their hands as Burnley were winning all the headers and we were unable to get hold of the ball or win the second ball.
So not the tactics planned at the outset and Hodgson said that there was an adjustment that led to an improvement in the second half.
I suspect the defence will be changed for the Newcastle game as we have the luxury of enough fit defenders now and the two games are close together.
I also expect Schlupp to start.

Get a grip. It was a shocking pass and Jimmy Mac knew it. We should have been level.

In my humble opinion, McArthur, crossing with his weaker left-foot put a tad too much pace on the cross and it could have been better directed.

At least Batshuayi was in the danger zone and made a valiant effort to steer it in - Benteke would have been outside the penalty area !

When one considers this effort, the two saves the goalkeeper made from Benteke and the save from Batshuayi, we did have our chances to win the game and I feel that Burnley were fortunate to get all the points.
