Just how many professors do we have in this country? There seems to be a different one appearing on TV every day, to go alongside the regular profs that we've come to recognise through this year.

They come in all ages too. My picture of a professor is the Back To The Future type, all wild white hair and strange eyes. Now it seems all professors dress and speak normally, and on so many subjects.

When did this profusion begin and why weren't we told about it? I'm beginning to feel inadequate as I don't have a Prof in front of my name.

Just had to get that off my chest and wondering if I'm alone?

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

A professor is merely someone appointed to that position by an institution. In reality it means little. The likelihood is they've researched for a PhD and written a few pieces in academic journals, or a book or two.
Some are very knowledgeable and productive, some are just lazy and spout sh1t. A bit like any group of people really.
Supposedly, they are experts on their subjects, but many really aren't. A lot of it is to do with the usual type of corruption (who you know). There is an entirely new type of corruption too. Be of the right race, gender or right-on social media justice warrior category and you can go far. You can even get loads of other people sacked or forced to resign with your constant highlighting of offence to whichever victims of discrimination you currently think is fashionable.
Take my word for it. I've just left the profession, I'm mere doctor now, a title I never use.

A professor is like an 'expert'.

They are often people who have actually stopped learning themselves.

I am afraid the expression 'full of s**t' can be accurately applied to many of them.

So, if you were suddenly ill with a heart condition and had to see a Consultant at the hospital, who would you rather consult with? A Professor of Cardiology with many years of pioneering, peer-reviewed work of international standing or one of his junior staffing Physicians who's dedicated but with a lot to learn?

I speak from family experience...take sage advice from the Prof.

Add Doctor to the list as well. A doctor to me is a medical person, not some moron who has a doctorate in media studies.

Fair enough, however a medical doctor literally only has a degree. A humanities doctor will likely have spent ten years studying their subject. In reality, medical doctors are not that highly educated or skilled. I know this isn't a popular opinion as they're all such heroes now. However, I couldn't care less. Last two things wrong with me I ended up treating myself after being told that there was nothing the 'doctor' could do. The levels of incompetence are rife in my experience. My son nearly died a few years ago. A junior doctor came in to take bloods. It took him so long and he was so jumpy it was clear he couldn't do it. He called a nurse, she said it wasn't her job. It took me about two seconds to just do it myself. I'm hoping the NHS is better than what we have here, but I can't imagine it being that much better.
For balance of course there are good doctors. I only saw one after a terrible incident yesterday. Hopefully, the follow up comes through.

when Einstein submitted his doctoral thesis it was rejected for not being good enough.

today a goldfish could become a professor for a BBC programme if she was left-leaning and had an annoying voice.

If she was left-leaning she probably would have a problem with her swim bladder.

TV professors. Have no knowledge but look good. In the seventies and eighties men with beards. Now good looking people, usually female. Soon all to be replaced by BAME or people with disabilities. You heard it here first. So goodbye Alice Roberts and Bethany Hughes. And that fake one who wrote historical fiction, oh yes, Hilary Mantel.

Academia,...it's a tough one. Gauging intelligence by a bit of paper.
I have met some right fck-wits with degrees, and yet self-employed plumbers, chippys and sparkys seem to be far more educated. But who am I to judge ?
