When you think about it most people, up until maybe even as recently as say 10 years ago, only had maybe two or three sources of media. Certainly in terms of the big stories then perhaps just the single one.

Most people bought a daily newspaper and most people sat down at a fixed time to watch a news bulletin. The stream of information was narrow and therefore much more controllable.

But now?

People bemoan social media and often with some justification but it has also opened up the world and made many many more people accountable for their actions.

Would Jimmy Saville have hidden in the shadows for so long in the spotlight of social media? Would have girls up north have been abused for so long in the spot light of social media?

Hence why I am so so wary of any and every attempt to limit what people are allowed to watch and listen to. Now I don't count myself as a 'fan' of Tommy Robinson and have long harboured suspicions that he is a state player in some guise of the other but the way he has been ostracised and treated by our legal system (I never realised but for somebody who is meant to be this hardened criminal they have never once allowed him to be adjudged by a jury) makes me realise have pernicious the attempts to control the narrative we are allowed to hear and learn about actually are.

Of course the usual suspects are now going to come on here and throw all the usual BS around (I know, its not his real name) but I would challenge any of them to, if possible, take a step back and ask themselves about the treatment meted out to him and wonder if that is actually a system they fully support. Because it could turn its attention in their direction one day, hence why we all have to oppose almost all attempts at censorship.

Totally agree. The brave new world of information is both a danger and a weapon for authority in what ever form that might take.
When it comes to opinion, nothing should be censored. There are occasions when censorship is appropriate but when it is used for political manipulation, there can be no acceptance.

Agree, the downside of it is it can be used to slaughter the innocent although I think that’s what you are also alluding to.

No programming here.

Now green as I feel they are the only party understanding the issues of today.

And I campaigned for Ted Heath (no wonder he lost!).

Have an open mind, if events show you were wrong, do not be afraid to change.

Looking back I would suggest that Tony Blair's government was a reasonable mix of mild toryism with social justice.

But Thatcher really changed Britain, and as we are now seeing, for the worst, a nasty selfish generation.

But a generation generally with money in its pocket. Who do you know now who doesn’t have a decent TV and kids who seem to have all they want, whether the parents are on benefits or not? I remember as a kid having to save up for everything I wanted.

Maybe I’m lucky having made a decent life for myself however as much as people hate Thatcher, the opportunity to earn money was there during her tenure.

without Thatcher, the UK would be more similar to Sweden or Ireland.

Countries where you are often better off unemployed than bothering to find gainful employment. And the fabric of society all falling apart.

The brave new world of information, via responsible search engines like Google, is indeed a wonderful thing.

Unfortunately many people get fed much more disinformation via social media which they accept at face value and never check.

Disinformation is not just an opinion. It is a deliberate attempt to deceive. If it originates, as if clearly often does, from places determined to sow disharmony in the west, it's dangerous.

Disinformation cannot just be ignored and treated as just another opinion. It is as big a security risk to us as any other kind of attack on our democracy. We fight terrorism. We must fight disinformation and it's our patriotic duty to support that fight.

If we lose this fight there will be no more free speech for any of us.

Responsible search engine? OK. If you say so.

Has it ever crossed your mind that maybe Google might be dishing you out disinformation?

Google, like every search engine, is a gateway to information and not a source of it.

So long as you read trustworthy sources then the information will be fine and there is nothing at all to stop you reading several and also the fact-checkers if you suspect disinformation.

There are places whose reputation for honesty and integrity has been established over the years and others who I wouldn't touch with a gold plated barge pole. That's all down to personal experience and observation over a long time.
