Lovely stuff back in the day, did most of the Youngs pub tour. ... 148 Youngs pubs, get a signature from each of the landlords and they gave you a tie, a Firkin and a trip round the brewery. Broke my heart last time I was in Wandsworth and the lovely smell of the brewery was no longer wafting in the air... Edited by mr. apollo (02 Feb 2021 11.08am) A market licence too I seem to remember.

All you lot reminising bout the 70/80's & Youngs beers, are totally missing the new(old) kid on the block WATNEYS PARTY 7. Yes, its back, soaked shirts/wallpaper/floors, trying to pour it into warm plastic glasses, ah the joys & memories
This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

Youngs exists now in name alone. The mergers and closure of the brewery saw the beers being shunted about the country and they are a shadow of their former glory. A pint of Special down the Railway, listening to Jazz at the Lord Napier or numerous other Youngs pubs around Thornton Heath was a major part of my youth. A pint of Winter Warmer after a cold match at Selhurst was heaven. Also glad we all remember Ordinary. I was in. Youngs pub up in town about 18 months ago and asked for a pint of ORDINARY,I was told by the yoof behind the bar they didn't sell it. Being the beer bore I can be I said but it's on the bar. No it isn't was the retort. Not even the manager knew what I was on about so I had a pint of Youngs bitter which tasted like brown p**s instead. Sam rooks, using the same water runs the old brews close and Wandle is not a bad pint.

As someone who lives in Wandsworth, a short walk fom the old brewery site, I still drink Special in a Youngs pub/hotel/restaurant. It is still quite an acceptable pint but no longer brewed by Youngs as the company appear to have totally lost interest in pubs anyway and have sold off most of the hostelries in the area to managed Ram Company outlets. Incidentally you could still get Winter Warmer last year but brewed by Marsdens now who don't seem to care whether they supply enough or not. Sad to see the great outfit run by John Young disappear but the traditional British pub has been completely screwed by high tax, drink driving restrictions and the taste (or lack of it!) of the younger drinkers for lagers.

I am so sorry to hear aboutthe demise of what was my favorite beer,so many happy memories. I long ago moved away, and now tend to avoid beer altogether,I did have a brief very enjoyable encounter with Adnams in Southwold. But avoid most for fear of awful disppointment

I was never a big fan of Youngs beers. Would only drink them at the Lamb in Leadenhall Market back in the day. Did a tour of the Wandsworth brewery the week before it closed for good , sad to see yet another brewery go.

The beer of my youth. Just pure nectar. Especially before they reduced the ABV back in the 80s or 90s. The Dog and Bull, Railway Telegraph, Fountain Head, Plough, Dukes Head, Greyhound. All hallowed ground. I used to work in Rothschild House in the Whitgift Centre in the mid to late seventies and a few pints of Youngs Special in the Dog & Bull was lunch almost every day

Will do. Reverend James is a very nice pint, and a good fall back if you don't trust the other beers on offer.
