As far as I'm concerned, Salako and McGoldrick were equal to Wilf. Probably Hilaire too. Watch the shift McGoldrick put in on any replay. He literally never stopped. That's not part of the current game.
Wilf is a good player - very skillful. Probably the most skillful player we've ever had, Hilaire is the other close one there. But best is totally different. Probably Sansom.

I used to put the manager's name in front of Red and Blue but got fed up with changing it. If someone cool becomes our manager then maybe..

Red and Blue Army!

It’s definitely Wilf.

I remember Taylor getting picked for England and being so proud, Lombardo looked different class, Samson quality too but defo Wilf for me (just opinion)

Best I have seen is hard as the game has changed a lot over the years.

Best keeper - Nigel Martyn

Best center back - Jim Cannon,
Best full back - Kenny Sansom
Best center midfield - Gerry Francis
Best winger - Wilf
Best forward - Ian Wright

There were loads of alternatives !

First game 1976 for me, best/GOAT XI in that time IMO;

Martyn
AWB, Cannon (C), Southgate, Sansom
Hilaire, Nicholas, Francis, Wilf
Bright, Wright

I’m was bit torn on Gilbert in place of Southgate, then Thomas for Nicholas and also Lombardo and Hilaire.

Also wanted to find a place for Murphy - loved “Spud” - wand of a left foot..!!

What this thread does prove is that over the years we have had some fantastic players.

Is the right answer. To quote from Nigel Sands’ book Player by Player Since 1960 (published in 1996):

“Tall, gaunt and pale, the angular Rachid appeared to be all arms and legs when moving at speed, so was quickly nicknamed ‘Spider’ by his team-mates, a soubriquet happily adopted by our fans.”

Having seen him play, I have to say it’s Johnny Byrne for me.

I would also like to give Cliff Holton a mention. His 32 goals in 69 appearances from December ‘62 when he joined us to the end of 1963-4 season, plus his physical presence, greatly contributed to our promotion to Division 2 when we were looking certainties to be relegated to Division 4.
