Robert Allen Zimmerman, born 24 May 1941. Changed his name to Bob Dylan in 1962. He’s 80 years old today, unbelievable, makes me feel young.

Dylan has written well over 600 songs and countless other verses and stories and sold more than 125m albums. His songs have been covered by over 6,000 artistes including The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix, Guns ‘n Roses and Adele. A version of “Another Cup Of Coffee” is on Tom Jones’ album released 2 weeks ago. Dylan says he wrote one of his most iconic songs, “Blowin’ In The Wind” in ten minutes then went across the road to perform it in the Gaslight coffee house in Greenwich Village NY. Labelled as the song that launched a thousand protest marches.

His output is prodigious and overwhelmingly powerful. He has performed 4045 concerts in over 800 cities worldwide since he began in 1961. That’s 1 concert every 5˝ days on average. His concert performances are quirky to say the least. I’ve been to a couple, the first at the Albert Hall in 1966 was brilliant. The second at Wembley 10 years later, not so. In addition to the songs he writes and records he is also an author, poet, composer of film scores, actor, artist, sculptor, Pulitzer and Nobel Prize winner and, more recently, creator of fine ‘Heaven’s Door’ whisky. And he’s funny. And an enigma.

In case you hadn’t noticed, I am unashamedly a fan. I will be playing my favourite Dylan albums today and sipping some Heaven’s Door later.

I realise he’s a bit Marmite, but are any of you with me on this or do you not get him? Have you any Bob tales to tell?

Anyway, Happy Birthday Bob and thanks.

“Ah, but I was so much older then,
I’m younger than that now”
from My Back Pages on Another Side of Bob Dylan.

my back pages - fantastic.

they played the times they are a changing on radio today, lyrics sounded relevant still.

Possibly the most overrated artist I can think off, however, it is of course subjective.

Found him a complete fake too, but then many in that industry are.

Wouldn't want to argue with you Tom, you're probably bigger than me. But......

I'm a fan but recognise that he's brought out a fair amount of dross down the years.

Blood On The Tracks is my favourite album of his. Rough and Rowdy Ways i think is excellent.

As for live - saw him once in the 70's, really good gig, but he's so inconsistent with his shows, I didn't risk another one !

Happy Birthday Bob...

Nothing to argue about my friend. Just differing tastes. Love the fact you are passionate about him. I have similar views on the Smiths. Absolutely crazy about them yet know many people can’t stand them.

To be fair I have never really explored Dylan so am probably basing my view on just half a dozen songs.

Do however acknowledge he’s a fantastic wordsmith, a little like Leonard Cohen.

Try this Tom. Just listen to Adele's interpretation of 'Make You Feel My Love'

A good example of his fine lyrics sung differently. A wonderful love song.

In the Sixties Columbia promoted his records with the strap 'Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan' Trying to explain away his unique delivery.

Enough, enough. I'm off for a Heaven's Door nightcap.

Sorry to resurrect my post about Dylan's 80th, but I can't get my head around the fact that it was a year ago yesterday.

Time, for me anyway, has flown by, but what a year it's been.

I was in NYC last November and Bob was playing the Beacon Theatre, lovely small venue. Tried to get tickets but Ticketmaster seemed unwilling to let me buy them

He was also playing in Port Chester, NY which I could have got tickets for, but getting there by public transport looked too difficult.

Shame, as I'd like to hear the Rough and Rowdy Ways tracks played live.

Happy 81st., Bob

Not a technical genius with the guitar. Wayward lyrics, sung with a voice that leaves me never quite sure if he's taking the pl55.

Outstanding work-rate and a legendary back-catalogue. Happy birthday Bob

Bad luck NEILLO. The amazing thing is, despite his age and the fact that his voice is shot (some say it always was) he can still fill venues.

Rough and Rowdy Ways is a great album and Heaven's Door is a fine whisky.

i love music with a passion. And can't stand Dylan's work. Totally over-rated in my opinion.

Give me Tom Waits or David Bowie any day.

But i have only respect for the man himself and wish him a happy 80th.
