I don't suppose anyone even thought about it then.

It would be interesting to know what the people, as a whole, think about Brexit now. Although I suspect most are still in "the relieved it's all over" phase and too busy coping with the pandemic to give it much thought.

Let's see in 5 or 10 years time.

They had years before the pandemic of being told their opinion was “reprehensible” and have been blamed for everything for five years. Even so, getting the result they voted on is likely more important than having Gary Lineker endorsing their opinion.

Older people can just as easily gather in virtual groups to confirm their biases as "young pups"!

If you don't think that happens here, that can only be because you are so immersed in the group's rhetoric you are blind to it. I don't think it's arguable.

This group consistently regard their own opinions as the truth, just as you do in your comment. Other opinions are "lies".

Thus, the BBC are biased, but the group aren't. Etc, etc.

And people, like me, who point this out just "waffle".

It is astonishing that a person of your age can quite happily point out other people's 'biases' and yet seem completely unaware of their own.

Stop deluding yourself that you are the guardian of truth.

Maybe, you seem to know some of the facts. But do realise that Tor is also used by whistleblowers and victims of crime, as well as journalists and their sources. Sometimes, anonymity is vital.

Certainly, hence the unanswerable question of privacy vs protecting the public. In a sense we're asked the question, what are we more okay with, easing the path of or to extremism and abuse (by attempting to provide complete privacy on these platforms) or enabling government control over the whole of society with zero scrutiny, consequence or accountability for them (by allowing encryption and privacy to be totally done away with). That clearly leads nowhere appealing either (think China). From sting operations and the like we see that platforms like TOR are used by many thousands of abusers, but thankfully many allow themselves to be entrapped, much in the same way that those operating at religious extremes do.

With the political and religious side of things, what we can say is that people most often do not even have any personal insight, reflective ability or recognition of their own behaviour anyway when they are mentally drifting from commonly understood norms. They're unlikely to be totally Joe Average one day and completely batsh!t politically the next, so government no doubt know signs to keep an eye on prior to people disappearing onto these platforms. Of course in general we're fine with this happening when it's Muslims under scrutiny, but it's interesting how 'what's their side of the story' it gets or how 'misunderstood' they were when it's not. In all communities, people need to steer others away from normalising or excusing individuals, organisations and ideologies that raise real concerns. Where we don't, we all lose out.

It wasn't the electorate's opinion that was reprehensible. It was the way that the situation was manipulated and the failure of our representatives, and our system, which was.

Lineker was rightly widely condemned for abusing his position.

I am completely aware of my own biases. Mine are towards fairness, equality, tolerance and a dislike of extreme views of every kind.

I am no more a guardian of truth than anyone else. I am though able to separate opinion from fact.

Pent-up demand accounts for that. Separating the impact of covid from that of Brexit is an impossible calculation. Time alone will make things clearer.

That is precisely what you are not able to do.

Please be clearer then.

It's not semantics, it's poor composition.

I am not aware of any objective, independent study specifically on this issue which either proves, or disproves your assertion. That it was a common perception among Leavers is certainly true, but it might surprise them to know that precisely the opposite perception was held by many Remainers.

If you are seriously seeking information, rather than simply wanting to bang a drum, take a look at these:-

Thank you but the links did not use hard facts.

The last link and its Brexit section (9.2) featured policy. It was factual but it was not centred on the
topic mentioned.
