By making that assertion in public the manager runs the risk of 1. Undermining our negotiating position with potential selling clubs and players. 2. Annoying the board who may interpret it as an open criticism. 3. Alienating the current playing staff who are deemed not good enough. Perhaps a more considered approach would have been to make those points to SP in private. I suspect it was because RH understood the need for diplomacy that he enjoyed such a long and distinguished career. It might not make for great tele, but iíd prefer anodyne waffle over the awkward truth every day, if thatís the best thing for the club. The only circumstances I can see in which a manager might go public with such a view is if he has already made the point privately without effect and feels he needs to put pressure on the decision makers to change their mind. If that is what was behind PVís comment then it really is worrying. My hunch however is that it was an ill advised comment by an inexperienced manager looking to save face after a very poor performance.

I remember Roy, saying we needed signings on various occasions.
The first time was at the end of his first season in charge. When he said ,if the club wanted to progress signings would be needed. He said something similar at the end of each seasons end.
The fact that when he stepped down he pointed out ,that the squad was hardly changed in four years says three things , the players never came , Roy sucked a promise each year, but most of all how he never stopped being the diplomat . Roy, was a master of adapting on and off the pitch. I donít think there are many others likely to . It wouldnít surprise me if Viera, wonít either.

Lots of rookie mistakes, especially trying 4-4-2 when we had looked OK at 4-3-3 preseason, that was skinny on PV at Nice, and it showed on the pitch. It was a weak team for sure, but none of the players seemed to know what the game plan was either with or without the ball. The team had a better balance with the substitutions. Roy had a formula that he could tweak, boring/frustrating, yes, but he got the best out of a mediocre squad most days, because they were drilled. Unfortunately, there is only so much perfume or lipstick you can put on the pig! I hope PV and his team understand that transition requires pragmatism, learn from the mistakes and put out a team that can work together, share responsibilities and be individually accountable for their performance.

I think this season will be a big learning curve for both manager and players. As long as he is learning from his mistakes I'm willing to accept that right now we may not have one of the top ten managers in the league. But if we're patient with him I think Vieira will soon 'grow' into the job and maybe come the return game v Chelski we'll see a big improvement.

I would not deem him "Inexperienced" given that he has been a manager for 180 games.

I would respectfully beg to differ. He has no Premier League experience at all and only one and a half seasons in Ligue 1. You may point to his time in the US, but I think few on here would, hand on heart, regard that as meaningful. So I donít think deeming PV inexperienced was unfair; though I readily concede this is an entirely subjective appraisal and in any event was not intended as a criticism. Compared to RH virtually every manager in the league is inexperienced!

I think you'll find he had two and a half seasons at Nice (Jun 2018 to Dec 2020). Most PL managers tend not to last that long!

Iíve got every confidence that Vieira is going to do a good job for us but having watched West Brom tonight I canít help thinking that Ismael would have been an interesting appointment assuming he was ever in the running. He reminds me a bit of Ferguson a bit watching him on the sidelines. Sir Alex I mean obviously.

"We've got so many positives to take. We were strong, focused, disciplined and kept a clean sheet.

"We kept the intensity for the full 90 minutes. And we gave the fans that joy to create the atmosphere we need.

"We want them to help make this an unpleasant place for away teams to come."

Hopefully Vieira will get to say something similar sooner rather than later.

Agree with this.
He has something about him and seems to get his teams playing with real vibrancy and energy.

I wish we had a player with a long throw like the West Brom right back, Blades look pants, possibly back to back relegations

Club signs player who is not broken, how novel.

Does anyone know if PV bought his own medical team?
