Rickman Hill and Marpit Lane parks in coulsdon haven't had the grass cut in weeks , I was wondering if anyone has noticed the same around the Borough?

I went to kick the ball with my lad and its impossible and having my council tax increased its a bit of a p,,, take!

Just found this! It's all down to cost cutting.

So we pay more and get less, how does that work!

If you are interested in what is happening (and not happening in the case of park maintenance) in Croydon can I recommend the excellent blog Inside Croydon. Without being political this should worry everyone who lives in the Borough.

So they fall back on the “ natural habitat “ excuse. Happy for the friends of parks to pick up the bill for planting! Thought my council were bad but….

Yup wildlife / nature reserve is always a good excuse to not cut the grass.

On a serious note parks are incredibly important to people's well being. When I was a kid we were poor so couldn't afford to do anything that involved spending money our local parks were a godsend for playing football and general rough and tumble.

remember having a 'parky' on sight, usually had his own hut & was a strict old bugger.
the park loos were pretty clean, as were the parks well presented, water fountains, some had a kiosk for drinks/lollies.
my local park as a kid was Bingham (bingham rd, addiscombe)
one side of the tennis courts had decorative planters, often depicting a flag or crown etc.
stream at the bottom, by the neighbouring club & generally immaculate.
would spend the day there in the summer.
I last went through it about 4 years ago, on a long walk detour.
was pleased to exit it, scruffy & groups of yoot hanging about.

I don’t think you’re keeping up

Along with many others we are now letting our back lawn revert to grass and wild flowers. Parks and verges should be the same.

‘The reason for thinking twice about our mowing habits comes down to stark facts. According to a report in the journal Biological Conservation, 97 per cent of British wildflower meadows have disappeared since the 1930s. A recent study published in the journal Nature Communications shows that many British pollinating insects are in decline, with rarer species, such as the red-shanked carder bee, really struggling. Between 1980 and 2013, every square kilometre in the UK lost an average of 11 species of bee and hoverfly. The reasons behind this are the use of insecticides, habitat loss and an overall reduction in biodiversity.’

It’s time we all did our bit. Also, longer grass is more prone to getting trodden in and sequestered as carbon. I hope at least you stuck to no mow May.

No interest in kids physical wellbeing and having the opportunity to kick a ball around a park then?

Who doesn’t?

Verges aren’t football pitches. Croydon’s parks have areas that are cut for games. Lloyd park has done that all over the place, including for disc golf. But the bigger parks have loads of room for meadows too.

People just love to moan without considering more broadly.
