Verges aren’t football pitches. Croydon’s parks have areas that are cut for games. Lloyd park has done that all over the place, including for disc golf. But the bigger parks have loads of room for meadows too.

People just love to moan without considering more broadly.

Considering what more broadly? I blame farmers growing produce such as oil seed reap for the lack of meadow land. There are very few dedicated urban public places to enjoy now and yet you appear happy to give part of them back.

Your initial post was not specific. "Parks should be the same". It gave the impression that all parks should be allowed to revert to open meadows.

No I didn’t. I made no comment on relative volumes. I also mentioned our back garden, not front. But you carry on getting angry.

Maple 'bringing you your s***e sandwich', today it's 'how you should change your attitude for the environment'.

Ah, the old bus inspector use to tell them where to get off.

I'm all for conservation for all the good it will do, but it is a little difficult to accept that a few parks in urban areas will solve the bee crisis when there are thousands of hectares of green meadows across Britain that could be better preserved for that purpose.
You also came on here with your usual superior attitude which antagonises people on any subject.

I am not angry at all, I just think handing back part of the few urban open spaces that we have to the countryside is a stupid idea and counterproductive to the wellbeing of people in our densely populated country.

Maybe every farmer who grows hay should stop cutting it. Maybe we should reduce the number of horses and cattle/sheep so that they stop eating hay and keeping pasture land short. There are numerous things that could be done before using the excuse of not cutting grass on parks to improve bees outcomes.

These issues were the main topics of Groundswell AG this year. I recommend you attend next year.

FYI, Lloyd Park looks lovely at the moment with its flowers. This year the bees seem to prefer white clover and dandelion. They appear not keen on Oil Seed Rape for some reason

What a sad soul.

Have you taken a look at the Croydon parks then?

You will find them busier than ever.

I'm sure a balance can be struck between usable green spaces (as everyone likes a kick-about) and verges, hedges and whatnot. The two complement each other in a way, and councils are generally crap at getting either right.

Historically Croydon has allowed meadow growth in Lloyd Park and at the end of the bee season had a farmer cut it for hay.

Wild bees tend to have full stores long before the harvest and have also done their pollination work. Then they simply chill, groom each other and relax. But they really need flowers in spring and early summer when they should be very busy

Croydon Council should be in the dictionary under Useless!
They are bankrupt financially, morally and also of intelligence.
I am sure thay they have some good people working there but the bosses are woeful.
Covid will be their excuse for years to come as to why they couldn't do this and that.
As for grass cutting - it is the same all over the South East.
They save pennies on important stuff but spend pounds on useless crap.
It all goes under the "you couldn't make it up" heading!
A real shame
