Just watched this highlight video of his 30 goals from last year...

About 5/6 penalties
8 mistakes from the keeper or shots that would have been saved by premier league goalies
Couple deflections
And the rest bang average uninspiring finishes.

Not one goal that I’d say was a fantastic strike even the one off his chest from outside the area would have been saved in the premier league.

People saying he’s a young Glenn Murray no way

I just hope I’m wrong

Even if you're not wrong scoring 30 goals regardless of the circumstances shows he can be in the right place at the right time, that many goals even in the championship isn't to be sniffed at, and even young Glenn Murray had his off days, I say if we do get him he'll take some time to adjust to the level then do what he does best and be in the right place at the right time.

Now listen. He’s up against the same opponents as the rest of the strikers in that league. He’s proven he’s one of the best at scoring goals. It sounds like you’re saying he’s been lucky but I don’t believe in luck during a 46 game season in the championship.

Them finishes are exactly the type of goals we need. Benteke and Wilf both bring other attributes but both are not “natural finishers” scoring 30 odd goal for a mod table table championship team is not be sniffed out even taking a decent pen is a skill in a strikers armourey. I would rather Armstrong take a pen than Benteke. Clearly he’s unproven in the premier league but a fox in the box is exactly what we need.

I honestly wouldn’t call them fox in the box goals wouldn’t call them right place right time I’m saying half of them shouldn’t have been goals..you say he plays against the same defenders and goalies as the rest of them but he’s clearly catching these guys on their “off days” when I see highlight videos of other players at championship level they usually have better finishing
I believe he’s a quantity over quality guy but doesnt look even half as good as Andy Johnson was at playing that ‘dogged’ striker role...watch the video and tell me if he’s just getting lucky half the time or not..we can all have lucky seasons where the ball drops right and the defender is having a stinker..doubt he’ll get many goals on a plate in the premier league

Heard he also has more shots than anybody else in the league...if the only ones that scored were these ones then would hate to see the ones that didn’t score

Like I said hope I’m wrong or better yet hope we sign someone unquestionably better

For the sake of fun let's go through it then.

1. Keeper shouldve done better but quick turn and awareness to catch him out.
2. Pen - good power and far right corner
We've seen much worse.
3. Low cross in shoulda been gobbled by keeper but rprt (right place right time)
4.cant tell from build up play but didnt hold onto it and scupper the chance trying to go around.
5. Pretty basic rprt
6. Who doesn't love a half volley past the keeper on his near post.
7.Pen - again good power sent keeper wrong way
8. Power beat the keepers soft hands
9. flexibility, pace, awkward position to get such power and accuracy
10.inch perfect diving header. Love this
11. Agree keeper should be stopping this
12.rebounds right back to him(luck) but good reaction to instantly put it in on second attempt
13.Pen - bottom left corner less pace but many keepers would find it hard to reach the bottom of the post
14.are you seeing that power great finish
15.not sure if he's scoring or assisting here but insane finish regardless
16. Dont think this deflected in think he bounced it under cbs legs and the bounce threw the keeper
17.great pass for the assist
18. Rprt yet again
19.good composure at a tough angle
20. Not much to be said other than can score headers
21.pen - less convincing
22. Good touch to chip a keeper coming straight at him
23. admittedly lucky
24. Umm..
25. Nothing to be said wouldn't count it as an assist
26. Fox in the box
27. Seems to like these low cut across passes to slot into a free net to be fair
28. Sprinting in like that would see many skyrocket the ball, went straight at the keeper but power still beat him and most importantly the accuracy given the speed he came at it
29. Low first time shot
30. Seems to get in the keepers face alot just so he can tap it around him.. does it effectively.

Final assessment:
Yes keepers generally should and will do better in the prem. But we don't expect him to score 30 in the prem. He doesn't go for anything flashy with those low first time hits, But he does it effectively. Highlight reels can always be misleading but from this I see more good than bad.

If we do go for Armstrong I'll be happy, because for strikers these days 15-20m seems right especially when its a type of striker that offers us something different.. plus he's only 24..

Thanks for taking the time to entertain my boredom fueled analysis.

Blimey we trying to sign a striker who scored 30 goals last season and 17 the season before that and your not happy.

I'd like to know who do you think we should sign instead of a striker like Armstrong who scores goals for fun.

Irrespective of what division of football you play in, the net is the net. When you instinctively know where that net is, then you’re half way there. Too many forwards just don’t have that instinct.
