We did put a bid in and it is alleged that we ere the lad's preferred destination among the existing suitors. We should know by the end of the day how serious we were. Either we match/gazump Saints or we get off the proverbial pot and move on.

I suspect we are more interested in getting a wide player in.

Trouble being it’s all alleged. You have to say this because we are not in possession of the facts.
Some would suppose we have spent our selves out. If so how could we have ever been in for this boy? If we do still have spending power I hope we have been talking to others since before our offer was rejected.
All this business about Armstrong wanting to go to come to Palace, can be taken with a pinch of salt,it’s not impossible he would, but just as likely his agent knew Southampton, needed a nudge. If true it looks like Saints get a player that didn’t really want to be there.

Spider it's Dike not Dyke. Also, he's unlikely to be ready for the PL immediately.

Apologies for the error. I agree about him not being ready but may fit into our budget. Who knows!

True. Dike is the footballer and the dykes are all playing in The Hundred

Sky News reporting:

Southampton have agreed a fee with Blackburn for striker Adam Armstrong.

The 24-year-old has now been given permission to speak to Ralph Hasenhuttl's side, with personal terms not expected to be an issue.

Southampton are looking to sign a new striker after selling last season's top scorer Danny Ings to Aston Villa for £25m last week.

Really hoped that Armstrong would be signing for The Eagles alas not to be.

We now know the price that Blackburn were willing to accept, and it looks like we were not willing to that high.

Unlike previous seasons, I have more confidence that we would have other options to pursue.

Disagree and I am extremely disappointed that Armstrong has not signed for us and sincerely hope that this doesn’t come back to haunt us. More than anything else we need a centre forward who has blistering pace and knows where the net is. This guy seemed to have it in the Championship and Southampton have seemingly got him.
How you can say that he would get more starts with them than us is without any substance given that all we have is Benteke who doesn’t have the pace or work rate that Armstrong has. We have done well in the TM up until now but big failure on this.

Firstly, for avoidance of doubt I was not enthusiastic about Nelson and Lookman, my comments were not in relation to Armstrong.

Apropos the number of starts, Southampton have used Ings and Adams as a two-man strikeforce and Armstrong would fit seemlessly into their shape.Armstrong is a similar player to Ings.

I believe that Benteke will start the season and might well get a regular berth depending of course on form and injury.
I don't envisage Vieira opting for a two-man strike force and Armstrong is not the player to plough a lone furrow up front.

If true, we have missed out there. Then again there must be a reason, either, no cash, other targets or we were just not as interested as the hype suggested.

Overall, I can't complain about the way things have been going for us in the transfer market of late. The four we have so far have given me more than enough optimism for the start of the season. Not to mention the additional backroom staff.

I Would like to see more come in though and was hoping this lad would be another AJ for us. Not likely, I know, it was just a thought.

We have too many forwards currently don't we?
Not necessarily good ones but the website list is - Benteke, Wickham, Ayew, Wilf, Mateta and Schlupp.
I don't count Schlupp as a forward and i can't believe that Wickham is still with us!
Maybe there is another target - who knows.

Heard he is on his way to the Saints!
Why do we always seem to miss out when half decent forwards are on offer?
We need more firepower up front.
Tammy Abraham would be a great asset if we've lost out on AA.

Surely there’s still a possibility we could match what Southampton have offered and hijack this deal. After all, it’s happened enough times to us, normally by West Ham. I suppose it depends how serious we are about getting him in.

The Dolphin
The other 4 can't score goals, maybe 10 between them!
Need a proven goal scorer at the top level and pretty quickly. Tons of mid-fielders!
