I wonder if Wilf's rage is largely directed at himself. He had his big move and, for whatever reason, it didn't work out. If you compare what he was like ten years ago, the joy in his game (just watch re-runs of the play-off semi and final, there is none of that now. I wonder if he is raging against the 'dying of the light', deep down he knows he isn't the player he was and he hates it.

I hope Vieira and Roberts can sort his head out because, if they can, he can still be a big player for us but I fear we may never see the 'old' Wilf again.

Guaita: what’s with all the punching? Catch it man.
Ward: not good enough at this level.
Andersen: what a quality operator. Lovely range of passing and so composed.
Guehi: hit the byline in the first few minutes, which was great to see, and had a really sound game. We are in good shape as far as CBs go.
Mitchell: not one of his best days but that’s okay.
Zaha: awful display. His excellent pre-season is a distant memory after two rancid efforts. Feeble petulance a worry.
Kouyate: loads of energy but not much to show for it. Clumsy at times.
Macca: nice work skip.
Schlupp: appalling again and simply not good enough. Had the cheek to look angry when he was hooked. We must avoid using him.
Gallagher: lovely player, unlucky not to score and a rare bright spot in a generally gloomy day.
Benteke: didn’t really happen for him today.

So you are saying that the new players are the dogs and those that kept us in the PL for the last 5 years are crap?

Happy happy JOY, JOY!

Totally agree with the majority of posters who deplored Wilfs attitude and lack of involvement. Find it more difficult to agree with the continual moan that Ward and Mitchell are ineffective, the back line was solid today, far more so than when we had Tomkins/Cahill/Kouyate and Ward and Mitchell were regularly in the final third of the pitch. Conor looks a breath of fresh air and I would have prefered to see Rak-Sakyi replace Schlupp. Just a bit of a pity that the game only lasted 75 minutes if you take off all the time the players in yellow spent laying on the ground.
Last game on MoD again, if we were the only game in town we would still be the last game shown, not the first!!

How the ref did not hand out (at least) one yellow for their time-wasting is beyond me. Schlupp and Ayew again not up to it, Koyuate not aware enough and losing the ball in dangerous positions, some of our passing diabolical and placing both central defenders behind our Spanish goalie when playing out from the back. We just invite the opposition to attack us.
On the bright side, captain MacArthur, Gallagher (esp. first half), and Andersen/Guehi.

I think we have to be realistic, this is a team in transition ... with only three new players on the pitch, all of whom did a better job than the players that they replaced from last season's team.

Bekkers was poor, Kouyate was a liability, Ward can't operate as a wing back and Schlupp was unable to create anything for the team. IMHO, PV should sub Wilf if he has another game like to today and then either he continues to throw his toys out of the pram, or he smartens up. PV needs to show who is in charge and make tough calls, even though it might hurt in the short term, in the long run it sets the tone for the whole of the team. AND I was completely unimpressed with Benteke throwing his hands up all the time insinuating that his team members were at fault. He was like a cart horse today, no speed, no running off the ball in to space and just wanting the ball on a silver platter - oh and by the way when he got a great cross on to his head, he put it way over the bar. I rest my case!

If Vieira isn't smart enough to realise Ward is a League 1 quality right back and gets rinsed by anyone with any ability and doesn't sign a right back by the end of the transfer window he should be sacked.

We've needed a right back for 3 seasons. It's insane how we've still not bought one (Clyne is a backup and Ferguson has not played since Vieira was playing).

I thought Ward was excellent today. We’re you watching the same fame?...

A much better performance yesterday but Brentford are a mirror of what PV wants us to be. They were so quick moving the ball and getting bodies forward.

We still lack pace although Gallagher made some excellent box to box runs. When we get our 2 injured players back that will help but we are crying out of an out and out pacy winger to cross the ball to big Ben.

In summary we are not that far off being a good team we just need one or 2 more players.

If you look at when Wilf is most effective it is when there is a second offensive outlet. This happened years ago when we were much more effective once we signed Yannick. Teams have to double or even treble up on Wilf. This draws players to him but frees up space on the pitch for others to exploit. It happened years ago with Yannick and at times last season with Eze. Problem at the moment is we have no other outlet.

Is the correct answer. No excuses for his display today and the petulance will never leave. However all the times teams are allowed to double/triple up on him, he won’t do much.

Much improved over the last game. If Gallagher's attempt had gone in it would have been a very different game, he just was very unlucky. Brentford are still in their newly promoted honeymoon period as Arsenal found out last week. Should see another step up in improvement at the next match. Interesting to see what team PV puts on Tuesday in the EFL against Watford.

I agree. In fact I could not believe how many people were fighting Brentford off, they are a very well organised, fit team with an excellent coach. However whether their intensity can be carried on all season will be interesting to watch

Perhaps PV is smart enough but who do you suggest he plays instead? Clyne has COVID and no academy players are good enough. Can’t blame PV for who he has available to pick from

Ward can definately be improved upon, but Mitchell yesterday worried me his passing was poor and he did n't get forward nearly as much as Ward. I've attached a heat map from Whoscored and it backs up how I saw the match Ward did far more attacking then Mitchell.
Zaha looked good for the first 30 minutes down the right with Gallagher and Ward linking up nicely. When Gallagher slipped and lost the ball, Zaha put in a good tackle then got up hunted down the wing back again and put in another good tackle, he looked up for it. He drifted out when he was moved to the left.
Yestersday was a work in progress but weshould have won and had by far the best chances.
