Not sure that is an opinion. Think it may be a fact.

With all the metrics collected in today's game I'm sure someone will come up with the stats to prove it one way or the other.

They're being sued by the players.

McCarthur is comfortably a better passer than Luka.

Firstly, how about getting the guy's name right - he's been with us for about 7 years now.

Macca is a great player, has energy and a never say die attitude, however, his passing is no better than average and rarely comes to receive it when we play out of defence. When he does he usually plays a simple pass, often back to the person who passed it to him. The cross field pass such as Luka's v Spurs is not Macca's strength.

As an example, when we played Newcastle at home last year in a 442 formation Roy played McArthur and Kouyate as the 2 centre mids. Macca was a little deeper and was asked to perform the 'Luka' role. A depleted Newcastle dominated the midfield and we struggled to create chances. That combination was never played again and Macca has never played that deep lying role since.

Thanks for the insights. Agree. Macca is an absolute gem. But a passing wizard he is not. We've seen Luka split defences and ping balls around in ways Macca could only dream of. Granted, he doesn't nail it 100% of the time...but to say Macca is a better passer than Luka just isn't true. (In my opinion, of course.)

Your best set-piece taker should take set-pieces.

look Roy, no one is ever going to agree with your decision to make Harry Kane take corners for England. Just enjoy your retirement and stop hacking into Hol posters' accounts to spread your strange ideas.

For corners and free kicks from wide areas Jairo looked our best bet in the pre season games.
He swung them away from the keeper so the keeper was reluctant to claim and our players were able to attack the ball.
Of course Jairo doesn't warrant a place in the team at present so clearly that's not an option.
My problem with Luka is he frequently just chips the ball into the keeper's hands from set pieces.
Olise may be our best bet if he can tie down a regular spot.
He can whip the ball in which can be difficult to defend.

You've back yourself into the moronic corner of having to write 'in my opinion' on every post you make on a forum where people share opinions - good job.

If you could point out some examples of Luka's defence splitting passes and pinging balls around, I'd be interested to hear them.

He has 5 assists 150+ apps and he takes set pieces - that's an abysmal record.

Macca has 20 assists in 300 Prem apps for us with no set pieces.

Good thing spelling on a fans forum means the grand sum of nothing.

I don't particularly disagree that his passing is 'no better than average' but neither is Luka's - in fact, I'd say it's considerably below average, so the logic that Macca can't play deeper because he's an average passer doesn't make any sense. Kouyate is probably the worst passer of the 3 and he's been giving the nod there, so again, logic doesn't hold up.

FFS let it go. Kouyate has played there early season because of lack of options. Luka wasn't fit and Jairo has proved he doesn't have the discipline to hold his position. Surely that's why Hughes was purchased. Kouyate can hold his position and is a decent tackler, hence he got the nod. No surprise that he was dropped after a few games. If my logic doesn't make sense why did Macca not get the nod and Kouyate played a bit higher up the pitch? I think PV can judge a decent defensive midfielder.
Luka clearly hasn't been great for a while and his lack of pace is also a big concern but when he does play well he makes us tick. Luka and Macca are different types of player and Macca has usually played further up the pitch.
The fact that about 5 managers now have all rated Macca but have not played him in a defensive midfield position speaks volumes IMHO.

Palace talk is so odd - we're discussing something on a forum, what do you mean let it go? Isn't this the whole reason the website exists?

Debating tactics is more interesting than correcting spelling, that's for sure.

The logic doesn't hold because you said Macca shouldn't play deep because his passing is no better than average, but we've already played a worst passer than him in that role.

He's just turned 34, a huge part of what makes him effective in his current role is his ability to cover ground and press, but that will invariably start to decline soon - I think he has more than enough technical ability to transition into a deeper role, and given the decent other options we have to play left in a midfield 3 (Schlupp, Hughes, Eze) I think it would help the balance of the squad.

I don't see anything from Luka to suggest he's a superior passer - he's completed one long pass all season according to whoscored.

I think Macca would be an upgrade in that role - better tackler, reads the game better, better athlete and I don't think he's a particularly inferior passer.

I honestly can't see why Hughes isn't getting a look in, it baffles me. Every game Luka starts and gets caught with the ball at his feet because he's too slow or makes a shocking pass and we lose possession, his good days are behind him. Set pieces, awful , I really can't see why anyone would start him over Hughes . I feel sorry for Hughes , he must be feeling like s*** when luka gets the nod in front of him.

What does Hughes have to do to get into this side? He's a fantastic passers of the ball, something Luka simply isn't anymore.
