Agree with most comments and that all 11 selected yesterday were under par including the ref. Biggest disappointment for me was Olise and Zaha when receiving the ball mainly knocked it back rather than driving forward. Players didn’t get into the box quick enough as well. Perhaps Villa should take credit for slowing us down but I think it was more our doing then them? As for Luka, awful performance including captaincy. Looked lost and passing was awful. Let’s hope it’s not just the loss of MacArthur and Andersen yesterday, otherwise our bench / replacements aren’t as good as we think they are?

At one point Villa had three players all rolling around faking injury. Burnley weren’t much better last week. This has got to stop. It ruins the game. Especially when 2 minutes later they are running around like nothings happened. Cheats.

Took the wind out of our sails every single time, they weren't silly and the ref showed his inexperience of dealing with it the moment it all began, but having said all that we lost the game with yet another awful defensive display, can't take anything away from their second though ..it'll be interesting to see the next ref's attitude to their falling like flies every time the opposition starts getting at them ..my guess is we won't see it because they won't allow it.

Although they broke up our forward play with their antics they did defend exceptionally well, we didn't and that's why we lost.

It was a relief to hear Vieira’s analysis. We were very poor relative to previous games. I don’t think we’ve played that bad since the 1st half v West Ham.
He got that line up wrong, especially the midfield.

God we miss Macca. If I had a pound for every time Luka bottled it - not just with his lateral, no-risk passing but also not engaging the ref. As for his free kicks…sheesh.

The defensive aspect was severely lacking in the 1st half. Tompkins wasn’t pinging those early cross field passes. As for the corner…not sure who is to blame but we have to sort that out.

Wilf offered little and it was good he got hooked. Olise wasn’t much better. That said very rarely did the ball get played in front of them to run onto.

Benteke was average too - not sure why he stayed on.

And the ref…

I think we were due one of these. Recent performances have been of a high standard even if results ( too many draws ) were a little underwhelming.

Yesterday we weren't quite at it. Added to that a Villa side that were well prepared and clearly responding to their new manager.

We weren't helped by the naivety of the referee who was taken in by Villa's antics in breaking play up.

Conceding yet again from a set piece is my biggest concern. It's getting to the point of spreading nervousness every time we concede a corner or free kick in our half.

In terms of our players, Tompkins was ok given this was his first start in ages, but he doesn't convince me as a player that's anything other than a back up, not genuine competition for a place in the team. Olise was disappointing and maybe best introduced later in games - but of course he needs time to learn and I think that's why he wasn't hooked when he could easily have been. Luka....well, this player has been in decline for a while now but that was brought into sharp focus yesterday. Him and Kouyate together does not work.

In a different thread ( I think on Gallagher ), I offered the view that Palace will not only need to replace him next season, but also to identify a successor to Jimmy Mac - I think that's becoming clearer after the last two games. It also appears that it's not going to be Will Hughes - I thought the Villa game would be ideal to hand him a start compared to Leeds / Man U away.

Bad day at the office yesterday but onwards and upwards as they say. It was Vieira’s first real setback so hopefully he’ll learn some lessons from it. If you could choose who we played next I’m sure a lot of people would choose Leeds. They seem to be in complete disarray at the moment so there’s no reason we can’t bounce back with a win.

I hope that the lesson PV learned was that if you have a slow midfield due to injuries playing the pressing game isn't going to work so either adapt your tactics or play more a mobile midfield.

Not so happy with the Kouyate/Luka duo in midfield..and think putting Edouard on the bench always a waste. Would have liked to see Hughes in the starting 11.

You were completely right! Luka / Kouyate was the reason we lost. Luka’s distribution and ambition continues to be woeful. We offered nothing in midfield which is where we lost it. We missed McArthur as Gallagher has to play further back and not to his strengths. The sooner he is back, the better.

A lot of players were off their game yesterday, but onwards and upwards next week to get back to a winning run.

Agree with this. Several times Tekkers could have noved into a more lethal place to finish off disguised passes from Gallager Wilf or Oliseh but never did. He is just lay and never reads the game. Always expects to be served the ball directly on his feet or head. Very poor footbaling mind this guy even if hes scored some goals, but hes also wasteda ton of opportunities.

It was a cold day to watch that dross - no plan or cohesion and at times we looked clueless.
PV should have started Gallagher in the middle and Luka on the bench - sadly he is too slow for our new way of playing now.
Maybe that meant Ayew out wide?
Whatever - our midfield failed to press and win 2nd phase balls and that was game over really.
Olise was nervous on his full debut sadly but he has to start sometime.
Tompkins, first proper game, struggled as well.
My bile though is reserved for Benteke.
Send him somewhere - anywhere, but Get him gone - lazy, lacking in foresight and ambition.
He is like a statue and should be ashamed of himself.
We concede from another set piece as well - what is going on?
Taking Wilf off and leaving Benteke on was baffling I'm afraid as well.
Villa cheated and the ref was worse than expected but we lost the game rather than they won it.
It was always going to happen but it shows our lack of strength in depth even though we are on the up generally.
Leeds followed by Man Utd could make this an unpleasant week for us.

Andersen and JMac not appearing shows our lack of like for like players. Couldn't get the ball passed out from the back and no tenacity in midfield. Both crucial players in those respects. Next 2 quick succession games could be testing, although Leeds also have their own injury woes and Bumfluff may not be on for his usual goal. If we are more clinical than the Weed last night against them we could profit in front of goal. Main worry, we could be the victim of our own downfall with stupid defensive errors in a possible tight game. Will be interesting to see how ManUre get on against Chelski and the Arse. If they do well against both, next Sunday will be a tough one. COYP !!

I think teams of similar stature to us will come and park the bus while we pass the ball from side to side and then try to do us on the break or from a set piece.

Overall we've failed to convince in our home games IMO.

Losing 1-0 at home to Villa isn't the time to flex your muscles with Zaha when Benteke and Olise were so poor. The latter looked like a player lacking confidence which is surprising given the start he's had.

No more needs to be said about Luka than other than it has to be Eze or Hughes in McArthur's absence as I don't see Riedewald or Schlupp as realistic alternatives.

Villa's play acting and diving particularly Martinez and Watkins was pathetic but they seemed to find a bit of quality at key moments when we lacked it.

Our new style depends on a full on Gallagher and our 2 CBs playing out from the back. When one is injured we dont have the personel to replace them. Tompkins is an out and out clear your lines defender and cant play the game that PV wants. I dont know what Hughes has done wrong but he is at least a footballer who is comfotable in possession unlike Luka and Kouyate.
