With our new style of possession based footabll we are turning into a Man City-lite, whilst still having the ability to score on the break.
Benteke really does not fit this system that well and with 18 months on his contract and having a relatively good season, this might be the last time to get some return from him and have his fee available and salary saved for someone younger now, or more likely, the summer. Newcastle is the obvious option where he would provide some much needed, Premiership-experienced, help upfront; would benefit from crosses from Trippier superior to anything Palace provide; and could still work well alongside Callum Wilson when he returns from injury

We have Ayew, Zaha, Olise and Edouard to play across the front. Mateta could also feature if we need a big man and can, I believe, still appear in up to half the remaining premier league games without triggering a permanent move. Rak-Sakyi also looks like the most likely Academy prospect to step forward, if required.

It seems to me that Gallagher will leave such a big hole next year that funds should be spared for that area. In midfield, unless they move Andersen there as the defensive guard - in which case a new central defender will be critical - We have Eze and Hughes who can be regarded as premier league quality going forward. McArthur cannot last at this level much longer and Kouyate is also long in the tooth and a liability on the ball. Schlupp is a handy sub, Milivojevic and Riedewald barely that

A lot to take in there.
Fundamentally it would be a sound plan to out Benteke now or summer. Football is ruthless and we have to play the transfer game out as well. If he doesn’t go soon he will walk eventually for free. Same Wilf.

Very sound reasoning ... we have some potentially interesting youth players coming through and may see more from them in the coming weeks especially if we have a decent Cup run. Potential sales of Benteke, and possibly Wilf, could help to fund some recruitment but I doubt we'll see either go before the end of this season.

I’ve never taken to Benteke anyway. Whatever the argument about him not getting the service, whether that’s wrong or right, he just hasn’t got that fire in his belly. He doesn’t work hard enough to make things happen, he doesn’t attack the ball in the area and he certainly doesn’t put himself about and let defenders know he’s there. Many a pundit has commented on this over the last two or three years. A gentle giant as martin Tyler called him recently. He wants the ball on a plate all the time and as for best header in Europe as Pardew labelled him?? Do me a favour!! I’d rather keep Mateta

So basically I’d get shot of him tomorrow if it was my decision

Funnily enough, I was thinking he would suit Newcastle. They cross a lot but have no centre forward without Wilson. Just imagine their fans' reactions

There seems to be an obsession with some on here around selling players for fear of them walking away for nothing at the end of their contracts. We already have evidence from last summer that the club do not view this as a matter for concern.

Currently we have two players of similar style in Benteke and Mateta. If you subscribe to the view that they don't suit our style of play then surely it's more cost effective to not play the £13m for Mateta , send him back and keep Benteke as we don't need both.

And if Newcastle want to buy him, let them make an offer - or any other club for that matter !

Why would you move an established defender in Andersen, to a position he's untried at and then go into the market for a new central defender ? Why not look to replace the midfield player ??

The squad needs further work and that will come in the summer. I think we are largely ok with what we have to get us through this season. The main question seems to be around exiting Mateta and possibly bringing in Nketiah.

How much of that lack of concern was due to the fact that John Textor was waiting in the wings with a substantial sum available for squad rebuilding

We'll never know of course.

Those contracts were allowed to wind down over a long period and I have no idea when contact was first made with Textor.

And it's entirely possible that his investment enables the club to continue to be unconcerned when it comes to Zaha, Benteke etc.

Interestingly, the media ( and/or JP's agent ) are now trying to link Newcastle with a move for Mateta
