Just about now, Graham Potter is sitting bolt upright in bed and thinking, “Why the —— did we play down the right side all night?” Mitchell wasn’t quite as sharp as usual but if the Weed had focused on Cucarella (or anyone) vs. Ward all game long, Brighton would have 30 chances to score.

Given the age and inexperience of Olise, Eze, Edouard, and Gallagher , and lack of playing time together, we did well.

That signals to me that Ward is far more respected by opposition teams than Mitchell. The people on here need to give him more credit. If that was Ward instead of Andersen at Brighton's equaliser I wager he would have put the ball out for a corner.

He did - But how often have we been the victim of a defenders arm around the neck of one of ours pulling him to the ground & nothing given - I would just be happy with consistency.

Agree, that is one of his strengths, strong in blocks and tackles. However any player with speed will exploit him. This was clear in the Leeds match with Raphinha and James giving him a torrid time (I have only watched a full match on Amazon Prime so other members might see more from other matches). Their late goal came from a corner on that flank and early in the 2nd half they almost scored with a quick break. Worringly PV did not react in that game to giving him some protection when he was clearly struggling. However that could punish our ability to attack on that flank. Without any player helping out he is exposed. That would a be a short term fix. Ultimately Roy knew the team needed a young pacy right sided full back, Ferguson. Unfortunately his introduction into the team has stumbled. Most teams have fast tricky wingers/full backs on both flanks and you have to combat that. They also can switch wings just negating a full back switch. Trouble just moves over to the other side of the pitch. He has been a great servant to the club but I feel his days might be numbered in the team.

It does show that he cares though- if he didnt care he wouldnt put so much into it.

Only a matter of time.

Eze has never offered anything defensively. People have short memories, clearly! I'm not knocking him - he's a real talent and we know what he's capable of. Glimpes of that yesterday.

He needs to be in the middle though, and Schlupp needs to be out wide. Schlupp moved wide and was immediately involved in a goal having been absent all game.

The key changes were Luka on for Eze and Mateta on for Edouard. We suddenly looked okay. Then, PV not learning from his mistakes, took Olise off for Benteke and killed any outlet we had going forwards. JPM was looking good up top and was then essentially moved to right midfield give how deep we were playing.

For Liverpool, we HAVE to start with Luka in DM - again, as soon as he came on, Hughes and Gallagher got further up the pitch than they had all game. He's not the long term answer, and it's CK's spot when he's back. Or even Macca's.

Schlupp goes out to the left or Edouard starts there.

Whilst I've been a big critic of his, JPM deserves a start too up top. If we need to bring Benteke on to shore things up, it's a straight swap for JPM.

Seems obvious to me, but maybe I'm missing something??

// It’s not that he can’t play outwide it’s just that last nights game he was so isolated and there was no space which is credit to Brighton , Maybe Pv should have changed this but it’s just about getting minutes into his legs. Eze centrally is a different beast obviously and is way more effective as more chance of getting the ball. To say he’s never offered anything defensively but had most interceptions last season for us does not go hand in hand. He’ll be gone in 2- 3 years for big money so let’s enjoy him while we have him.

That is 6 attempts that Potter has failed to get a win against us, yes 6!!

On top of that he has spent 200 million more on players than us, so they would have a better team than us without doubt. Which is incredible when you think we have been in the Premiership longer than them. Just goes to show the lack of investment in the team under Roy’s management.

It was Wards error that resulted in the own goal, had he been more decisive and put the ball out for a corner we may well have won, instead he panicked lost control of the ball and hey presto, they scored. Ward had a terrible game last night, his passing was awful and his errors were in abundance all night, as other have said he is way past his best!

Late to this thread but other than our goal, far too much of our play vs The Seagulls just seemed insipid with easy loss of possession and not helped by wayward passing. Butland was MOTM that will do his confidence the world of good whilst Anderson likewise put in surely his best match of the season. Could've (and arguably should've) been Brighton causing to an easy win by half time.

On a separate note, African Cup Of Nations continues to be a major headache in terms of removing vital squad players from crucial domestic fixtures - why can't this tournament take place every FOUR years instead of TWO and during a break in domestic seasons?

Andersen had his best game for us as did Butland, I’d be tempted to give him a run of games now.

Schlupp try’s his best and his attitude is fantastic but he’s definitely a square peg in a round hole at the moment.

Still not convinced about Mateta or Mitchell at this level but the occasional signs are there for some optimism.

Poor performance and outplayed for large parts of it. Lucky to get a point taking into account the overall performance however also blummin annoying to concede a late (own goal) equaliser that cost us yet another win and another two valuable points! How many points have we dropped this season from a winning position?!?

Just a shame that it was Ward that got turned over to leave Andersen, trying to block.

Oh well someone was actually watching. He doesn’t always deserve the stick he gets at times,. But last night was not good.
