For me, he'll always be THE voice of University Challenge. A humble and very modest man who apparently did a lot of research into both the questions and answers for the quiz he made his own for 25 years. RIP.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

He had a much more gentle approach than Paxman, he would often commiserate with contestants over wrong answers and explain how they'd got them wring. Paxman looks as though he wants to call them idiots.

In interviews fair enough, but it seems a little ill fitting on University Challenge.
