Lets not take Viera not playing a striker against Chelsea as though he has lost the plot.

They are very good, we played pretty well, and had we been more clinical might have won it.

The formation and team selection looked right for how we tried to play

Interesting article about the lack of clarity in Vieira’s football philosophy at Nice.
I’m not sure it’s strictly relevant to his time at Palace so far.
From the outset he made it clear that he was going to play 433 and he has not really tinkered with this formation apart from last Saturday and in occasional spells in other games when he has used two up front.
Where there appears to be a lack of clarity of thought is in the front 3, in particular the striker role.
You can kind of understand the ‘horses for courses’ selection of either Ayew or Olise in the right side position depending upon who we are playing.
Zaha has occupied the left side position for some time and it would be a brave call to leave him out, even though his form on occasions may warrant his exclusion.
That leaves the central position.
For the moment Benteke seems to have been discarded as an option, even not being used as an option from the bench.
Mateta mysteriously went from being on the verge of being sold to becoming seemingly first choice in a matter of weeks.
Edouard started in a blaze of optimism but does not seem trusted in the central role and has looked more effective drifting in from the left.
There definitely appears to be confused thinking from Vieira here.

Agree. If we're going to play the ball on the ground, commit to Eduoard and back him. I'm sure he'll score.

If we're going to actually deliver crosses into the box, play Benteke. I'm sure he'll score.

Mateta isn't the answer.

If Olise plays I'd like to see Benteke given a go, MO does put a lot of crossed in the box. All 3 forwards have differet attributes, for me OE is the best of the lot but has struggled with the central striker role. He was ok against Brentford.

Vieira is under a lot of pressure, as a player he coped very well, oddly he doesn't seem to cope so well as a manager.I think we are heading for trouble. Other teams in the bottom half are playing great football,we are all over the place.

All over the place? Really?
We lose by a last-minute goal to the European and world club champions, and we're 'all over the place'?

With all due respect I think you're bonkers.

I think Vieira is getting a lot right but his insistence on mixing up the central Striker postion game to game is madness and stopping any chance of us getting a 10-15 goal a season Striker in form.

From what I’ve seen, I’m not going to be unrealistic and say there’s a 20 goal striker in our ranks but I definitely think Mateta or Edouard can score consistently once every 2-3 games to keep a steady stream of goals coming in if given the chance.

I’m of the opinion Mateta is our best out and out Striker but a lot think he’s useless and Edouard because he’s more skilful Is the way to go. Id be happy with either given a proper shot.

Strikers thrive on confidence and consistency more so than any other position. If we start one of them 2 games in a row you can see they are playing with the thought “if I don’t score by the 75th minute I’m getting swapped for the other or Benteke”.

It’s even more frustrating when we wasted about 3 seasons trying to play Benteke into form when it was clear he never would. I’m not asking for that but Vieira needs to tell whichever one he prefers ‘you have the rest of this season as main no.9.’ By the end of the season get rid if they’ve not done anything. But we will never know if we keep benching Strikers and giving Zaha a Striker position just to appease his ego.

Agree, been saying this for a while. Personally I dont care between Mateta or Edouard. Just pick one and give him a run of 8/10 games to see what he can do.

Perhaps "All over the place" isn't fair - or correct.

But 3 goals in our last 5 league matches?

Have you not looked at our results this year? Well, we haven't won,we leak goals at set pieces and have a knack for letting in goals in the last minute.I have other real evidence but first I will let you quibble about this post.

I'm struggling to see that this = him not able to cope

Not able to find the wining formula, not being able to legislate for individual mistakes or poor finishing....maybe.

Has he broken down in a press conference? Is there dressing room unrest? Are we getting battered every week?

Nope

We've lost 3 games this year, unluckily. We've drawn the others, but should have won a couple. Not ideal, but hardly signals that he cant cope
