Best Team Since the Coppell Era..??

When I look at how the top 3 play and finish then Palace have a lot more improvement to make (as constantly alluded to by PV). The team in the Coppell era were at the top. Palace today are somewhere between 4th and 8th. Our defence is improving but still fragile (Everton could have scored first 20 minutes of FA cup quarter final and a top 3 team would have). When I watch how Arsenal defend without the ball and how Man City create chances I can see that Palace aint there yet. But I think with a little more tweaking and improvement we can be in the top 3 and even win the league - not today though.

I think overall this is a better footballing team than the 1990's Coppell one. In the early 90's we were very direct relying a lot on the Wright Bright patnership when most teams were playing 442. Those were the days Goalies could pick up the ball when it was passed back and launch it long. Set piece wise ( apart from yesterday ) Coppell's team scored lots and did not concede many where as i think after a shaky first 1/2 of the season we have stopped leaking soft goals from corners and even scored one ourselves.

Always difficult to compare era's but I would say the current side on balance is better. The year we finished 3rd was a freak aka Leicester, it all just clicked whilst some of the big teams failed to compete. We may never finish 3rd with this team but I think the standard across the PL is far higher. An FA final win will of course remove all doubt.

Every season the bookies make the promoted teams favourite for relegation. That used to be way off but now it looks much closer to reality. Since the 2019 season only one of the surviving 17 is not in the PL this season - that's Bournemouth who are tied on to come back up. There is increasingly churn between the divisions nowadays.

On the face of it the Gallagher replacement looks key. That said the truth is I suspect is that there is no like for like replacement out there if we are looking for a similar output. He has been amazing this season - not just in comparatively limited Palace terms but in more global PL terms as he's a strong candidate for a spot in the PL team of the season. An interesting parallel here is what happened with Lingard at West Ham last season. He too was completely brilliant and was key in their transformation. They have kicked on again this season despite not having him and not replacing him directly. Moyes has adapted their attack so that they make best use of what they have - in their case relying more on Benrahma. Think it is possible that our best route is to follow suit. We are highly unlikely to get Gallagher back. We are equally unlikely going to find anyone who can replicate what he has been doing. We do though have Eze - who was on the verge of England team this time last year. He's a different player but an amazing talent. We'll need to find a different way of making the omelette. The contribution of Gallagher may turn out to be to have given the team impetus. (Also see potential growth through Edouard Olise and Mateta- all of whom have looked really good at points but none of whom have put in a season. They are all works in progress.)

I think what's most encouraging for me is that we have lots of players that can positively contribute to games. All of our forward players yesterday had a hand in a goal, either scoring, assisting or a big part of the build up.

You've nailed it here. it's about adjusting our system slightly. I think that in Hughes we have someone who can do the legwork Gallagher does. the only issue is he's slightly further back on the pitch.. It could mean that it will allow us to play Eze in front of him.

It could mean that it will allow us to play Eze in front of him. Big fan of Hughes here. I was delighted when we signed him and - for once! - think I got that one right. He's had limited minutes so far but he's been really very good and given a season's acclimatisation I can see him becoming a fixture next season onwards oiling the wheels of the side. He's one of the few players we have who are in the mid 20s bracket. Should be coming into his prime just about now.

Spot on, we keep saying how strong our bench is these days, as apposed to previous years, once you got passed our best eleven, we were pretty weak. Also I think Wilf is starting to thrive on the fact that we’re not so reliant on him
