Most certainly, and a sure indication of psychological capitulation by Vieira. I was right about one thing, I thought Vieira would start cautiously, and when I saw that line-up and the mode they were laid out I thought Hodgson had returned and we were playing for a draw...

Viera has form in doing this, different kettle of fish of course but did this frequently whilst at NYCFC.

I thought we did well actually, and I'll defend PV's game plan.

1) We were never going to dominate play. We needed to take our chances, and we missed 3 good ones: Andersen's header, Kouyate's header, and Kouyate's drive off the post.

2) Defensively, our formation and team play was fine. Only two individual errors led to the goals. Chelsea seldom threatened.

3) Up front, I suspect PV hoped Wilf would have a greater chance of earning a penalty if he played nearer the center.

4) Our lack of pressure seemed more of a tactical choice than a matter of Gallagher's absence. I think PV feared that Chelsea would burn us if we tried to apply pressure high.

5) As for man selection, I believe PV wanted to spread the wealth, share the load, reward the veterans. I can't argue.

It took a superb shot in the 66th minute for the game to turn against us and even then, we had a chance if Andersen had executed a routine header from point-blank range. For a side with exactly 0 players who would see much, if any, playing time for Chelsea, we played well enough to pull off a massive upset.

good post mate.

Agree with much of this and I understood the tactical approach. For me where it fell down is that Ward is not a wing back and his role seemed largely redundant as he offered little going forward.
Furthermore the withdrawal of Mateta for Ayew affected our shape and balance and we invited pressure while isolating Zaha.
By no means a poor overall performance though.

Great day out. Don’t get these games often enough. Perhaps that will change with Vieria at the helm? Thought subs were strange taking off Macca and Schlup and bringing on two forwards. We lost our midfield which resulted in 2nd Chelsea goal. Then we took of Kouyate for Luka. If anything we needed those two together rather than bringing on two forwards leaving us short in midfield. Oh well, trip to Wembley and staying in the premiership is a great season for a club like ours :-)

Chelsea are not that good, we forgot to attack, we should have played 4-3.3 with the normal back four, kouyate and MacArthur in midfield, Olise, Mateta and wilf, as normal and Eze chasing down like Gallagher, if he wasn't doing it replace him with Schlupp, not play a completly new system FFS, PV f****d up

We had 3 decent chances. Anderson x 2 , Kouyate, don’t take them. That’s the difference.

I had Anderson first goal 125/1, hit the post

Anderson 2 goals or more,900/1 missed an open goal header

Would have 10 grand. But I’d give more for 1 Fa cup.

FFS Chelsea are on a totally different level to us. They have beaten us the last 10 times, we have played them, they just beat Real Madrid away, current Champions league and World Club holders. Without Gallagher, who is key to his normal system wasn't available, PV tried to shuffle his pack, it worked in the first half, Chelsea reorganised at halftime.
Your hero Eze is just so overrated, Olise showed him up in the few minutes he was on the pitch.

That seems quite accurate.

Eze has ability of course, but there’s a lot more he needs to do to fulfil any potential.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

It looked like he was playing within himself. He prob needs a run of games.

Yep, agree there too. Probably both a physical and psychological couple of hurdles to overcome and get back in the game.

What worries me about Eze is he’s such a natural talent but that only gets you so far. Not my favourite person but ol’ Cristiano is a perfect example of a very talented footballer who didn’t rest on what he had ‘God-given’, as they say.
