The world is in a depression. We were in a hole, caused by that depression and Brexit. Having a desired direction of travel is fine. We can disagree with it and criticise it, but can also understand it. Deciding to rush headlong down the road, without a clear idea of how to steer the vehicle, without fuel in the tank to get you there, or reserves to tackle contingencies, whilst alienating those you depend on for support, is simply irresponsible idealism. A wise builder measures twice and cuts once. It seems Truss's first measurement was faulty and her cut misdirected. Truss has dug our hole deeper. Instead of first creating the stability from which we can grow, she has set back the time when that could start. It's a huge own goal, scored by Truss, but assisted by the Tory Party membership.

I have been a staunch member for decades, I have known those in the membership for many a year and had the privilege of being in the company of many avuncular and perspicacious ladies and gentleman, with rich life experiences and from an array of backgrounds and professions.Such people are not buffoons but estimable human beings with erudition seeping from every pore.

Sorry Willo ... they've definitely cocked up by 'selecting' Liz Truss. I don't think they knew her well enough or understood the implications of her policies in these difficult times. They certainly haven’t monitored her political career. Did you vote for her?

There are a number of definitions of "buffoon" on the internet. The one that seems most apposite is this:- "Someone whose ridiculous behaviour is a source of amusement to others". So it has nothing to do with background and experiences. It only refers to behaviour. As others, including me, find the behaviour ridiculous, even if isn't that amusing, I think the use of the term is accurate.

Interest rate rises have historically been used to dampen consumer spending. In cases where inflation is not being caused by over spending, such as now, they still increase interest rates, basically because they have their heads buried in the sand and for supposedly intelligent people are actually as thick as sh!te. In a case where inflation is caused by energy costs increasing interest rates simply adds to the inflation as company borrowing costs more, thus prices go up and consumers have less to spend so less items get purchased. its a spiral into recession and the idiots poor petrol on the fire by increasing interest rates. It would be far better of they were to control energy/fuel prices by using variable tax rates and subsidies. Thus the cost of items would not increase and the economy would remain on a stable footing. But they are too stupid to work that out.
