We need a bit more grit? too many 'flair' players?

i think if we played 4-2-3-1 like Arsenal, with Xhaka and Partey as there two, then Wilf, Eze and Olise and the one being Edouard, Ayew or Mateta

Defeats against Leeds and Leicester in our next two fixtures, will in all likelihood see us anchored in the bottom three.

Me thinks we will struggle this season, with survival our key priority.

No need to unnecessarily wet pants.

Of our seven games we've already played 4 of the 'big 6' which are games we expect to lose. In addition, we've played Newcastle away which is a tough fixture. Of our two realistically winnable games (Villa & Brentford at home), we've taken 4 points, which is a good return.

for me, the only real disappointment so far was PV's negative tactics when try to see out the win against Brentford.

From what I've seen so far, which is pretty much all of it, we look a solid team with exciting young attacking players. With all their riches, we matched Chelsea yesterday and it took a late wonder goal to beat us.

We can only really judge how good we are at the halfway point of the season when everyone has played each other. I'm extremely confident we'll be between 10th-13th by that point.

The next 7 league fixtures on paper look far easier than the previous 7. If we're near the bottom then, perhaps its time to start getting a bit edgy.

I hate reading posts like this as I hold hope that external hysteria will match my own internal panic and therefore something will be done (by the club) to soothe me.

All that said, I think this is a very out of place, sensible and valid commentary.

For context, I have not watched us at any point and thought ‘we look awful’. Liverpool n City away, were well in both games, cheated out of Chelsea and lost on very first day to league leaders. Perhaps not quite as bleak as it may seem. Leeds and Leicester will be telling.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Have a look at the Invincibles side that Vieira was a key part of. The midfield pairing of Vieira and Gilberto is pure grit. They were fortunate to have up front Bergkamp and Henry, two of the best, but that side were extremely functional and hard working. They also had a mean streak which I'm afraid we don't have. Vieira, a formidable hard tackling player, has yet to impress that particular side of the game onto our current midfield, which surprises me.

When Vieira joined Palace and was asked about playing style in midfield he said he wanted to play with one number 6 (holding) and two number 8s (box to box).
Arguably we looked at our most effective in this system when early last season we had Kouyate, Gallagher and McArthur who all looked comfortable in their roles.
In my view the jury is out as to whether we have current midfield personnel to suit this way of playing.
Olise and Eze are wonderful talents but inexperienced at the top level and it’s a big ask to expect them to perform the two number 8 roles.
They may be better in a four or five man midfield to allow them to express themselves rather than chasing shadows which they have to do in a three.
It also places an unfair burden on Doucoure in terms of defensive workload.
For that matter the energetic Schlupp has many qualities but doesn’t have attributes to play central midfield long term other than on occasions when needs must.
It’s a conundrum because I can’t see us changing formation to suit our current squad because the 433 is Vieira’s preferred system regardless of available personnel.
Fair enough, he’s the manager and has to live or die by the decisions but it would be interesting to see other systems at least explored (I know he’s occasionally tried 5 at the back, but we don’t really have the wing backs).

I think we have been caught out, with a rather weak midfield, and full backs not up to the job, needed a little more imaginative investment in players !!

you are basically right, but the manager has to pick a team to fit the payers not players to fit the team, Doucoure, Luka and Hughes are No6s. Eze is a No10. McArthur is crooked, Olise is wide or No 10, you can't play two No 8s if you don't have any, you play what you have two 6s and a 10

That is the best formation we have at the moment, and Luka, Jairo or Hughes have to fill one of those DM roles, we had at least 4 players playing in a position that isn't there best against Chelsea

Definitely got to start winning games. As others have said, the next 5/6 matches are ones we can win. Last season we pulled off some great 3 pointers against teams that we were not expecting to beat.

Dare I say it, Wolves are in the same position as us - and look what happened to their manager. PV has been a breath of fresh air around the place, his just is safe….but for how long????

Injuries ! So Ferguson/Macca /Clyne/Anderson out - cover in Hughes / Tomkin/Milo leaves us less confident in their abilities in the Premier.

Patrick did say he has to do what he can with what he has & we all know he has made a huge change

Yet the players show great promise against the top teams of which a win or draw could have see us punching above like Brighton.

So what’s next - Panic No yet planning needs
1) Dougie / Steve got to get them weaknesses filled supply Patrick !
2) Understanding - A) force the error don’t always still back and wait for opponents to press - if they have a throw or a short Goal kick put them under
B) Hughes / Milo - when you come on put in 110% don’t come on pointing directions to players whom been on for 85 mins - you need to put in 90 mins in 10 don’t be lazy
3) Wilf encourage Mitchell please - he doesn’t mean to miss your too feet needs when he has two players to mark & he ain’t getting support
4) Guaita / Eduardo- practice them kick outs - 5 kick outs and no where near f do I’d we win an Air challenge
5) every shot missed is a punishment missed - it’s great to get shots in amazing to watch but oh boy we get punished when we miss them - regardless how crap the officials are we must score

Work on them but don’t panic

We could be in the bottom 3 tonight if Forest win, but I don’t see the panic, we’ve had a tough start and have generally played well. Obviously there’s our usual failings, conceding late and not finishing teams of when we’re on top, but we’ve got a run of games now before the World Cup break where hopefully we can get some results……if we don’t, then we can panic
