I too, knew Jeff Beck at Elmwood school Wisbech, maybe we knew each other too, although he was a year ahead of me.

After the Wallington Odeon closed down and was converted into a cafe, a friend of mine worked there and served Beck a burger and after eating it he left without paying. Whenever Beck's name was mentioned my pal would say 'that b****** Beck still owes me' because he had to make up the cost from his wages.

Wisbech also refers to some of the other names at that old school, like Roy Budd who went on to write many film themes including Get Carter. My claim to fame is that I beat him at marbles.

Anyway, very sudden and sad news about the great guitarist's death. Thoughts with all those close to him.

RIP JB.

We would surely have seen one another. I lived on the other side of the park. Remember the head, Mr Stacey and the metalwork teacher Mr Barty, whose wife also taught there? He caned me for calling him by his nickname. Or Mr Pulman the geography teacher who was so enthusiastic that his passion for the natural world stayed with me until now. He took our year to the Lake District to experience glaciation and climb Scar Fell, the first time I had been north of London. Remember the 1d buns and packs of Orange Jubbly sold at the corner shop? That's where the Del Boy catchphrase came from I am sure.

I'm not sure Jeff would have remembered so much! His Wiki page missed out his time at Elmwood completely and had him going to Sutton High! I was in touch with his brother a few years back who told me that Jeff was more interested in restoring antique cars than music at that time.

Had to respond Wisbech. I lived just off Wallington Green and I certainly remember headmaster Stacey, mainly because of his caning prowess.

The geography teacher was Pullen, affectionately known as 'Plumb' as I recall. The owner of the Tuck Shop on the corner where we bought 1d buns, Wagon Wheels and 2oz of various loose sweets was Mr Geers. They were good times, especially watching the girls playing netball.

Small world eh?

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Hi POG
Apparently Jeff Beck sang in a church choir. Do you happen to know which church?
I sang in the parish church in Wallington.

I bumped into him at the luggage carousel at Verona Airport sometime ago. I was sitting in the row behind him in the plain. We had a little chat about Wallington and I got an autograph on my boarding pass.

I knew Jeff Beck as a schoolboy. We were in the same year at Hackbridge County Secondary. There were 4 classes, ranked on ability. He had no interest in school and no obvious academic skills. He was always moody, difficult and unapproachable and showed no musical interest, quite unlike another contemporary at the same time, Roy Budd who played the school piano and made it sing. Roy went on to become a famous composer of film scores.

Jeff was just different. He had long hair well before it became fashionable and rode a chopper bike with cow horn handles when such things were unknown.

He lived in Desmayne Rd Wallington, opposite Beddington Park and close to where I grew up, so we occupied the same spaces but weren’t in the same circles.

Strangely the school, which was a bog standard, run down secondary modern long since demolished, also produced two other well known people. Alex Stepney and Edward Woodward both went there.

Jeff could certainly play guitar but knowing him as a boy I was never surprised to hear when he had fallen out with band members or failed to secure a place. Apparently he was approached to join the Stones at one time but couldn’t agree on what his role would be.

My wife, already worried about my health, received the news of his death very badly.!

RIP Jeff. May your clouds have silver linings.

That's quite the opening line. I didn't expect to get a meaningful insight from up close via you and Geezer. It sounds like he marched to his own beat, and is fascinating that someone I'm a fan of, is connected to a couple of the fellows on here, or at least that you closed paths. Thanks for the meaningful contribution. RIP Jeff.

If I may butt in, I think it's highly unlikely he sang in a church choir. He lived only a few houses down Demense Rd away from the junction with Croydon Rd opposite Church Rd which leads into Beddington Park and where Beddington Church is.

If he had sung in a choir it would likely be there, and he didn't, because I did. I was a member for several years, and a server after that. Apart from that, he just wasn't that sort.

I think I might have been in his first ever band! The school had no music tradition, or interest, at all, but was required to provide some input. I recall us being gathered in the hall, given triangles and tin whistles and expected to "play" along to a badly out of tune ancient upright piano.

Is this where his early nickname Tooting Beck came from?

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

I really don't know the background to JB's choir story bc. It seems Wisbech has a better handle on where he may have sung. I went to the Cubs in Wallington Holy Trinity church which is not far from Demesne Road. Could have been there I guess.

You did well to get the great man's autograph. Nice one. I've been listening to Blow by Blow this morning just to remind myself how good a guitarist he was.

Anyway, interesting that there are a few of us old Wallingtonians on here.

I bought a cheap ex Jukebox copy of Hi Ho Silver Lining late in 1967. On flipping it over I discovered the wonder that is Beck's Bolero.

Pretty sure my copy had that and Rock my Plimsoul on the b side but it was a re-release from the early 70's.
