During the Medieval, Serfs were tied to the land they tilled. Not allowed to wander far away.....without the express permission of the Lord of the Manor. You must stay in your little cottage and do your work. Failure or refusal to be brainwashed by the Church was strongly discouraged. The Black Death pandemic did away with that as Labour became scarce and wages needed to be competitive. Which indirectly fed into the Peasant's Revolt.

Personally, my retirement plans are predicated on the notion of taking myself off to an island in the Adriatic and seeing out my twilight years in a quiet little spot where everything I need and want is within a 15-minute gentle stroll. So I grasp that part. But this is my choice. And from what I can make out, the conflict appears to be around the notion/belief/fallacy, even though I struggle to grasp the details, that the Left are seeking to effectively impose this on people? Genuinely interested in what is happening on this one because I cannot seem to get any straightforward answers, from either side.. Surely, Canaries fit the bill, low crime, low cost of living, subsidized by the EU, free healthcare if over 67, great weather, 75% of travel between two spanish places, if resident, heaven

When I retired I rented an apartment for 4 weeks in Los Cristianos Teneriffe as an experiment. After 3 weeks I was bored yes the weather was nice and so was the beach but it was not for me a complete lack of culture. Actually that's not true the British culture was daytime drinking again not for me. I'm glad I did it as I realised I like London and the UK and missed art galleries and museums.

if i was to retire to 'a place in the sun', i would defo try to avoid drunken hooligan brits. So Benidorm is a no no. Whereas some Southern City or town, at least 100 miles inland from the sea ? maybe. so maybe Zagreb, Sofia, Toulouse or Salamanca. Who cares if its cold in January. The rest of the year is nice and the cost of living is cheap. And no drunken brits puking and fighting in the streets. any other retirement-cities that Eagles would recommend ? Edited by PalazioVecchio (22 Feb 2023 1.16pm) Benni is a lot better than it used to be, one of our HOLer's lives far end of Levante Beach. 10k further along coast towards Alicante is a place called El Campello, its mainly a 'Spanish' resort, but, there it a thriving British ex-pats community(i know this). You just need to do your homework.

An air-conditioning repair man told me that maybe 5% of his customers are spanish.....the rest are Russian, German, Brits, Dutch and everything else you could imagine. it's not the real Spain. And as for the Balearic Islands ? seems to be a running joke among the Spanish....totally colonized, totally avoid.

A film that always made me shiver was Logan's Run. It was released in 1976, those of a certain age may remember it. Set in 2274 in a 'utopian' city within an enclosed dome, where there is little or no work for humans to perform, and inhabitants are free to pursue all of the pleasures of life. The one catch: your life is limited to the age of thirty, then you are terminated. To be honest all this ULEZ and 15 minute city nonsense sounds like life is beginning to follow art. The concept of being encouraged to keep within a close radius of home is alien to most and although, for various reasons I am not as mobile as I once was, it feels like the future is going to become a very dull and restricted place. Edited by PalazioVecchio (22 Feb 2023 12.59pm) Jesus Enslaved? The only thing enslaving people is the same thing that's been enslaving them for centuries. Money. Have less, do less. Have more, do more. Fairly simple. On the subject of your list, if we're talking about the UK ID cards Vaccination certs License fee The only thing that will generate a peasants revolt is the ever increasing gap between the affluent and the poverty stricken, and automation.

From what I understand this is simply a glorified planning initiative. 'Plan your city around making sure all necessary amenities are within a 15-minute walk' Translation, make peoples lives easier and ensure it's less about luck or status as to whether you have access to essential and beneficial amenities. Personally I think it's more of a planning concept, i.e. have hubs within cities so most of the time you're 15-20 mins walk away from the essentials. However, I don't think this is particularly cost effective to retrofit. Planning a new city or town, fine. Makes sense. Weirdly people have taken it to mean dystopian fenced off quarantine zones, guarded by the military and where you need to show ID to leave and enter. Riiight 'A 15-minute city does not confine us to our neighbourhoods or restrict our ability to travel. If your city adopts a 15-minute city approach, it simply means that it will become more possible and pleasant to meet more of your day-to-day needs, like buying groceries, within a short walk or bike ride from home if you want to. It means creating the conditions for local businesses, that rely on local custom, to thrive. Millions of people in cities around the world already live like this, and always have done; others are forced to travel to meet basic needs. Being able to do more close to home does not change to your freedom to travel further whenever you would like to.' Sounds good to me, as long as the area in question is easy to develop according to that approach. Needs to be applied to suitable candidate areas only to avoid massive waste on consultancy fees and ballooning budgets.

Oddly enough, Albania, almost anywhere along its coast line. Never been but from what I understand, a real gem. Plus it must be half empty by now. Or Belgrade. Again, not an obvious choice but only hear good things about it.
