I’d say yes to Paddy in Championship but that is not going to happen now.

I wouldn't go with Paddy at this stage.
It would be a huge risk given his lack of experience or track record at senior level.
He's never even managed a club at any senior level with his experience confined to younger players.
To say he would be a realistic choice seems to me to based more on sentiment because of his Palace links as opposed to an assessment based on professional credentials.

It's by no means a straightforward decision.
When Allardyce left he thought Chris Wilder would have been a good replacement given his unbroken success at every level culminating in achieving promotion and keeping Sheffield United up against all the odds.
However, since then his record has been shocking.
It's so unpredictable with the flavour of any given month eventually seen as useless.

I do think we avoid vanity projects where a big name manager think they are doing us a favour (Gerrard, Lampard).

Ultimately though I suppose all managers end up failing with ever shortening tenures at clubs.
It's the nature of the profession.

It was noticeable yesterday that Roy was chatting quite a lot with Ray just like in the old days yet this time round Paddy is supposedly the Assistant Manager but it seems that although he has the job title he may not actually have the job

I was making a broader point that great players make even very good managers.
The recent consistently high performing managers include the likes of Ferguson, Wenger, Mourinho and Klopp.
Even their best friends wouldn't classify them as great players in their playing days.
Great players, often naturally talented, seem to struggle in conveying simple messages to lesser players.
Even in our own case Hodgson was reputedly not much of a player and has made a long and relatively succesful career through his coaching.
With regard to Lampard I don't know if there was ever a genuine prospect of him joining before Vieira being appointed, but the rumour was that he was interviewed but withdrew from the process when he wasn't offered the job straight away with other candidates due to be seen.
