After having memory jogged by the article about the Anglo-Italian Cup on the club website I was wondering if anyone knows who the first European Club to play Palace at Selhurst were (friendlies included). The earliest that I can remember was Slovan Bratislava on 31st January 1962 (I think we won 3-2 but my memory may be wrong).

Not the first, but the first that I remember was a friendly against AZ Alkmaar somewhere around 1966. It was an mid-week evening game played mid-season.

I think that was against French side Nancy, which was part of the Festival of Britain series in May 1951. We were beaten 2-1 and the Norwood News headline was 'French Team Give Palace A Lesson.' Nancy were French cup semi finalists that year and boasted a couple of players from the Argentine national team - so no great shock, given Palace were still moored in Division 3 south in those days.

That was April 1962, PZ Eagle - to mark the opening of the Selhurst Park floodlights - and we did indeed lose 4-3 - albeit to a team that included Di Stefano, Puskas, Gento and Del Sol. No shame there!

That's absolutely correct. He made his debut for West Ham in March '62, but kept a promise to Palace chairman Arthur Wait that he'd return for the Real Madrid game a month later as a guest - and West Ham allowed him to do it. Imagine that happening today? Byrne had a good game on that rainy night and according to reports from the day, both Di Stefano and Puskas described him as 'world class.'

The Coppell team had the most ignominious defeat. I only posted about it a while ago but still forget who it was. Whichever Greeks/Turks it was - they were sh1t. Just think, we could have reached the heady heights of West Ham now.

I was there at both these games, officially 98 of us for the away game, 'kin scary. Here's the line-ups from the home game & it was TV as manager not Sir Steve. The best team I've ever seen play at Selhurst without a doubt. It was a foul night and the attendance could/should have been better.
