I agree AS, last night's match did have it's sneaky moments. My comments about the players was more to do with their size and when she marvels at the sight of a 6'7", 20 stone rugger player I often ponder what she saw in me all those years ago.

I sympathise - my other half is a Kiwi and also has eyes for the rugby players.

While I can't do anything about my height ( 5'11'' ), I've been steadily working my way towards 20st. over the last few years.

Well 2 matches down today loved Namibia's shirt & considering they had 3 of SA's world cup winning squad in their team, they were what they were, rubbish. As for the Ireland game shame they couldn't beat their all time score of 83-3, one sided or what.

Forgot, they won 82-8

Quite a bit of play acting and trying to fool the ref in the rugby these days I'm afraid. Some pretty blatant fouling off the ball too. There was some vicious unnoticed targetting of players on the ground by France last night. Win at all costs is the name of the game.

So it's become just like football then.

Despite having followed Rugby Union since the 1960s, I turned my back on it during the last World Cup and haven't watched a game since. Partly for the reasons you've highlighted, but also because every match (apart from the mismatched walkovers) seems to be decided on the whim of the officials. It's all about "winning penalties" with brute force. And when those penalties are awarded, to most observers it's impossible to know what the offence was without an explanation and impossible to understand - particularly at the scrum - why countless other apparent offences were ignored.

England's last 3 matches at the last World Cup were perfect examples of what RU had become. They were all about baffling penalty awards at the scrum. Can anyone remember a thrilling passage of play from any of the 3 matches? Unless of course you are thrilled by the sight of the referee's arm aloft over yet another collapsed scrum.

Oh and another thing that annoys me is the incredible amount of time that's taken in an attempt - it seems - to find a technical reason to disallow a try.

YT. Semi Final v All Blacks was pretty thrilling with some great running rugby. I take RU as a great second winter sport. I do agree that the penalties seem a bit random at times, but they do seem to get on better with the technology!

I enjoyed that more than the football earlier, one things for sure whatever happens to our rugby team at least we’ll know they’ll have given their all and put their bodies on the line, not sure you can ever say that about some of the England football team

True, not pretty, but a wins a win, especially at world cups. Dawson in one of his columns said England's discipline is a cause for concern, 3 players sent off in their last 4 matches, not good

Yes, but yesterday - notwithstanding the sending off - I cannot remember england conceding so few penalties. Their discipline was superb.

I agree that the laws have become a nightmare, but, to be fair, the commentary teams are getting very good at explaining the referees' decisions, often with the help of a quick replay pf the incident in question.
