Taking the long view - if we don’t let our best players play international football when we get the chance - are we going to have a better team?

Remember the healing hands of Fergie.

Wednesday Moan United players injured for England game. That weekend a Moan United game "and yeah like Lazarus they raised up from their sick bed under the healing hands of St Alex of Ferguson."

Ryan Giggs was famous for this and it didn't harm his club career.

So Marc did great against Ukraine and we all applaud him. Problem is the next game up on Tuesday a “Friendly” against Scotland. Am I being paranoid in thinking there is no way that I want to see Eze on the pitch for that game? I can just see him being hacked to pieces in this “Friendly” and him being out for many games. I would prefer that he waits for his next cap in a proper game.COYP

100% agree

That wasn’t the point I was making.
We can’t stop them playing for their countries , other than trying to get them to feign injury , and I wouldn’t advocate that.
My preference, selfishly, would be for them not to be selected in the first place.
Less risk of the over hyped nonsense that seems to follow international football where a piece of very good play leads players to be deemed ‘world class,’ less risk of getting injured while on international duty, more chance to continue to work instead with your domestic club, manager and teammates.
I also note the tremendous drop in form after the World Cup where Vieira couldn’t buy a decent performance let alone a win.
It may be a coincidence, but we were dropping like a balloon.

I may be in a minority here, but I don't welcome international breaks or enjoy international football. For clubs like Palace we've got everything to lose as well.
If players like Eze play even reasonably well for England, the media hype goes into overdrive and he's being sold from everyone from Real Madrid to Newcastle.
It does raise the player's profile so he may be valued a bit higher, but I'm not sure that's a price worth paying when you consider the downside.
There's also the possibility of the player getting injured on international duty as we found to our cost with Olise.
It's no wonder that Ferguson tried to keep his Man Utd players as far away as possible from playing international games.

Completely agree.

I’m amazed Eze didn’t play last night, when the game was crying out for a forward player to go by 2 defenders. Southgate is a complete wrongun, I don’t want this helmet anywhere near Selhurst Park!

I’m the same, I think my biggest problem these days is, the last 10 years palace have been locking horns with these players every week in the premier league and I really don’t like some of them, for example, Pickford, Rashford, Maguire, Kane, Henderson and in the recent past Mount, Dele Ali etc, so I find it hard switching from hating them at selhurst to then supporting them and wanting them to win.

It’s a shame because when we were 2nd division/championship I used to love the England team, especially back in the days of Keegan, Francis, Coppell, Hoddle, Sansom, Robson, Butcher, Shilton, Gazza, Lineker etc

You are absolutely right. What warranted Pickford, Maguire and Henderson playing last night? Pickford has had a stinker so far this season and the other 2 haven’t played a minutes football!

Southgate is not good at letting go. He is so staid and his football so boring. Maybe we will see Ian Wright and Shearer running out v Scotland.
The 1st eleven have to play really really badly before Southgate reacts. Last night was just bad.
One word Southgate.....EZE.

I’ve not got a problem with them playing so much, it’s just the fact that I really don’t like some of them from watching them against palace. Pickford and his cocky smug little grin when he’s in front of us at the Whitehorse end, Harry Kane celebrating in front of us when he scores for spurs etc
It really brought it home to me a few years ago when Deli Ali nearly broke Yohan Cabaye’s ankle, then stood there smiling. The very next week England were playing and I found myself shouting ‘go on Deli’ I thought what the feck am I doing?? I hated this bloke last week!!

Assume you are young as being in my seventies it was always England first before your club, a sign of the times now like the me me society we live in now.
